The Dance Decade is not merely a radio show, it is an annual event. If you have not been to this party yet, now is the time to get your invitation: the good news is, everyone is welcome and it is free entry to all lovers of soul music (dress code - casual).
Each year, legendary dj
The Master J takes lovers of soul music on a musical journey through time. The first stop, on Sunday, October 29 at 10am, is 1979. In the weeks that follow, this ten week voyage will call in at every year right up to 1988.
Unlike other shows that play 1980s soul, what makes this one unique, special and amazing is the selection of music and the man behind it. With a record bag loaded with the finest, rarest and most incredible vinyl lps, 12s and 7s (not a CD or MP3 in sight), MJ is able to revive some of the greatest music ever made. A few of these you will know, but many will be new to you and you can guarantee you will want to own all of them in your own collection. Although you’d struggle to find many of them, and would probably need to remortgage your home to do so.
There are a select few djs have the experience and understanding of this underrated genre of music, and MJ is one such dj. It is commendable to say the least that this is MJ’s tenth year of broadcasting Soul AM, which has built up its own community of dedicated followers. This in itself is unheard of for a largely underground show which has decided to stay true to its loyal listeners than to take the move to commercial radio and dilute what is so special about the show.
Over the ten weeks of the Dance Decade, listeners can look forward to many treats. Expect to hear the likes of Glenn Jones, Chic, Rose Royce, Circle City Band, Phyllis Hyman, Kashif and you can bet your bank balance that Carol Williams will get a spin on the decks for the 1982 year too. In fact, expect to hear quite the sweetest, smoothest and most sensational soul from this magical era of music. It is not just a journey, it is a sonic education and musical enlightenment. If you think this sounds a little over the top, tune in for yourself an prepare to be surprised! In the meantime, you can sample some past Dance Decade shows on the music player on the right hand side of this page.
We simply cannot wait.
SOUL AM: THE DANCE DECADE, 10am-12pm every Sunday in 2011
Radiocafe is proud to be sponsoring the Dance Decade year of 1982.
In our opinion, this was one of the greatest years ever for great music, not least since it saw the birth of the StreetSounds compilations which revolutionised soul music. But also, since it was also the year of release of one of the definitive “must have” albums of all time, the self-entitled Don Blackman LP.
In conjunction with Soul a.m., we will be offering a sensational new and sealed Arista 5509 vinyl copy of the Blackman album PLUS a sealed copy of the album on CD on the Expansions label, which has been remastered from the original tapes. With the recent demise of the Arista label, this is an album which has important place in musical history and is already a classic much sought by collectors.
Listen out for tracks from the album and the quiz question on Sunday 19 November: Soul AM, Tongue & Groove Radio, 10am-12pm, listen live at Tongue & Groove Radio or at soulam.co.uk.
