Robbie Vincent - back on air!

The world of soul and jazz- funk owes so much to Robbie Vincent, who has pioneered the good music cause for decades. And, following hundreds of emails and posts to us at Radiocafe from fans who missed his presence on our airwaves, Robbie is now back doing what he does so magnificently - see the update at the end of this article with news of where you can now find Robbie. Below you can also read earlier comments from those who so passionately supported the our campaign to “Bring Back Robbie Vincent”.
During the late 1970s and through the 1980s, soul lovers were treated to one of the best radio shows of all time, Robbie Vincent’s Saturday lunchtime progamme. Many also recall very fondly his legendary Sunday night show on Radio 1.
Robbie phrases such as “if it moves, funk it” became part of our vocabulary, with his music getting our “rhythm buds” going every time. He even had his own a soul satellite that used to scan the country and land in a particular location each week.
Many will recall Robbie’s regular slots on Radio London, the Saturday soul show and his daily phone-in (there was no one better at daily talk shows). However, Robbie in fact started broadcasting on BBC Radio 1 in 1977, with an hour of the best in soul and disco on a Saturday evening, straight after Alan Freeman.
He became a Radio 1 regular in 1983, and his Sunday evening show is fondly remembered for bringing the very best in soul and jazz funk to the nation. It really was “the sound of Sunday Night”, as the jingle claimed! During this period, not only did he play the leading soul cuts of the day, but he also brought us live concerts from up-and-coming stars of soul such as Luther Vandross and Anita Baker. He was also one of the broadcasters responsible for the rising popularity of soul music, playing sensational tracks such as Billy Griffin’s ‘Believe It Or Not’ and Hindsight’s ‘Small Change’, which gained much needed airplay. Such artists are too little heard in today’s more commercialised radio. Sadly the show came to an end in 1989.
Robbie not only played the best, but interviewed them too: Roy Ayers, James Brown, Marvin Gaye, Rick James, The Crusaders and so many, many more. Beyond hosting some of the very best soul shows of all times, Robbie promoted numerous artists and virtually single-handeldly changed the face of soul and jazz funk in the UK. In the early 80s, listeners would be treated to amazing jazz funk recordings such as Bob James’ ‘Sign of the Times’, George Duke’s ‘Brazilian Love Affair’ and Rodney Franklin’s ‘The Groove’; and gems from artists such as Maze (whom he introduced to the UK), Kashif, Evelyn ‘Champagne’ King and Billy Griffin formed the sensational soul selection we enjoyed each week.
Even his phone-in show listeners were treated to some top jazz-funk. His earlier shows kicked off with Ronnie Foster’s ‘Argentina’, an amazing track which is rarely if ever played nowadays. When he moved to the lunchtimes, he introduced his shows with another gem, ‘Friends and Strangers’ by Dave Grusin.
The Grusin Jap-jazz track appeared on the brilliant Mastercuts series, as part of ‘Classic Jazz-Funk Volume 6′. But Robbie fans will be more interested in Volume 5, in which we were treated to 12 jazz funk gems which Robbie “carefully selected so that only the best reach the turntable” (in Robbie’s own words). Robbie’s incredible selections included top tracks such as ‘Grand Prix’ by Fuse One, ‘Sausalito’ by Grover Washington Jr., and ‘Countdown (Captain Fingers)’ by Lee Ritenour. Sadly this collection, like the man himself, is in scarce supply these days.
Robbie moved on from Radio London, leaving not long before the powers-that-be decided to remove the soul from the station and re-branded it as something completely anonymous. When Robbie’s Radio 1 show also came to an end, he spent some time at Kiss FM before moving to London’s Jazz FM, where he established another regular Sunday slot, this time in the mornings. As Jazz FM became JFM, then went back to Jazz FM, Robbie became the regular early morning man, and we were fortunate to have a daily dose of his inimitable brand of broadcasting.
But somehow the station seemed to have little idea of what it was, and it felt as though the music Robbie played was restrained by the station management. We heard less of his fantastic mix of hard soul, up-front jazz and raw funk gems, and more of the smooth jazz and commercial tracks which seemed to pander to the station’s money men. Robbie decided to move on, and since his departure the station became ‘Smooth Radio’, playing the same old same old mix of music as just about everyone else. But…
UPDATE - October 2008:
We, like so many of Robbie’s fans, were delighted to learn that Robbie Vincent was to return to our airwaves. He now has a fantastic show on Jazz FM every Sunday morning between 10am and 1pm, and sounds as good as ever.
Thanks to all those who supported the Campaign To Bring Back Robbie! And well done Jazz FM for a superb new line-up.

Just been listening to Love TKO Teddy Pendergras and thought what ever happened to Robbie Vincent.
In my early twenties I spent many times in Dunstable listening to Robbie Perform. I also frquented many (I mean many) Caister Soul Weekends (Organised from The Pink Elephant, Southgate) watching Robbie Vincent and Chris Hill get the crowd going wild on the Sunday afternoon slot.
It would be great to get Robbie Vincent back on the radio.
Thanks Dave - those were fantastic days they were for soul music weren’t they? Take a look at Soul Walking (http://www.soulwalking.co.uk/Family%20Album.html) for some further memories of Chris Hill and Robbie.
At least Greg Edwards is still on our radios (Gold, Fridays and Saturday evenings), about the only person these days who is likely to play a decent amount of Teddy Pendergrass. Incidentally, one of Teddy’s late 70s concerts is now available on DVD for only a few quid, as well as one he did in his wheelchair only a few years ago (absolutely amazing).
If you can access Unkown FM (108fm and online), The Master J, who is an old friend of Greg Edwards, also plays soul and jazz funk in the Robbie style every Sunday morning betweeen 8 and 10. Good to know some people are keeping soul alive!
If you know anyone else who misses Robbie, do send them this way. We’re going to try and track the great man down, and there are a lot of people who really miss the guy, including all of us.
Thanks a lot for your contribution, and welcome to the Radiocafe family.
Cheers
Paul @ Radiocafe
Yes please bring back Robbie Vincent.
Always remember his call in shows. Brilliant.
Miss hearing his voice on radio.
Hi, I may only be 26 years old but I urge you to track down & help bring back the “God” that is Robbie Vincent, he is the reason I have a huge record collection consisting of quality Disco, Soul, Jazz, Boogie & Funk from the 70s & 80s.
I may have been too young to remember his shows personally but I grew up with recordings of his great Sunday Night Soul Show - Radio 1….Stereo, Funk! (Thanks Dad).
Just hearing his voice over the top of a Soul tune makes me very happy, he was a man that knew EXACTLY what he was doing & loved it.
If there was a radio DJ i’d want to be it would be him.
If you read this Robbie i’d like to say thanks for the inspiration & influence you’ve given a young man like myself, Im gunna try & pay you back by attempting to help bring all the good grooves back. WATCH THIS SPACE!!!!!!!!
Speaking of good grooves, anybody who loved the stuff Robbie used to play can check me out on SSRadio, The Good Groove 8am GMT Monday mornings, going back in time digging deep in the roots of House via Soul, Funk, Boogie & Disco.
View previous playlists, listen again & rate previous shows at: www.ssradiouk.com/index.php?cat=VictorP
Thankyou.
We have got to Bring back Robbie Vincent, this should be a priority for every lover of
real Soul/Jazz/Funk Music. If you remember the great days in the 70’s and 80’s of Sat
afternoon on Radio London, Sun Nite in Radio 1, this has now got to be our main goal in life where music is concerned.
Lets have Robbie back on Saturday lunch times 11.30 till 2 for starters, the rest will follow.
Soulfully yours
Patrick..The Ascot Soul Crew..

steve b
Thanks Steve, Patrick, Janet and Victor.
We have stacks of emails from fans asking about Robbie Vincent’s whereabouts. One of our aims in 2008 is to try and find out where Robbie is, and whether he has any plans to return to our airwaves.
Those of us who had the privilege of his Saturday and Sunday shows, and his phone-ins, and in later years, his breakfast show enjoyed some of the most entertaining radio of all time. Plus we learned so much about good music.
A fundamental problem these days, it seems, lies with the radio stations. Many seem to care little about talent such as Robbie and great music such as the amazing soul and jazz-funk that he played; the stations all seem to be getting just a little too samey, and if Robbie did depart Jazz FM (now Smooth FM) largely due to its music policy then that was absoultely the right move, if you take a look at what the station has become. Ditto Radio 1, Radio London, LBC etc.
Where has the heart, and more importantly the soul, gone from our radio stations?
Internet radio provides some glimmer of hope, with Tony Monson doing good things over at Solar, the last place Robbie was heard. [Tony - if you happen to read this: we are going to be profiling you as one of the true legends of soul music; and any idea what Robbie is up to?] The main problem with internet radio is, though, it’s so much harder to find the good stuff amidst all the junk.
So yes, Steve, we do need a bigger campaign to bring back Robbie, and we’re hoping to do this be garnering support from within the industry and from passionate, intelligent listeners such as all of you here who clearly know your music and radio.
We’re already getting a number of overlooked artists involved in Radiocafe’s Campaign For Real Music, all with the aim of giving the discerning public a little more of the great artists, DJs and shows which have been replaced with too many shows playing the same mix of rock and pop generated from a hard drive.
We are very pleased to have all of you on board as members of the Radiocafe Family. Spread the word folks!
Paul @ Radiocafe
I just want to add my name to the campaign to bring back Robbie Vincent.I would love to be adding to my music collection due to Robbie’s influence. Also the comments on today’s radio stations were spot on.
I found this site, great get him back. Ive been asking myself for years where is RV.I have tapes of many (all?) Radio London Sat 11.30 from approx 79. Auntie Mable cant help, my ears and feet don’t feel so good. I cant go to bed with Robbie Vincent.(Circa 1977). The weekly phone in was great to while away the day.
Come on Robbie you must read some of this, the Soul patrols and Auntie Mable miss you. From the Barns Green Boogie Team.
Thanks a lot Kevin. Wow, I’d love to hear some of those shows from Saturday, you are very fortunate to have those! I have some good ones of his Sunday evening show on Radio 1 - let me know if you’d like some of these to supplement yours.
We have some very interesting plans to locate Robbie - watch this space! The UK needs to hear the great man again soon, to really get our rhythm buds going and our bass bins shaking.
Paul
What a great find! Thanks for the campaign, Radiocafé. Robbie Vincent needs to return and bless the radio airwaves again. It was him who inspired me to collect lots of funk and rare records from yesteryear. He once played a track by Vivienne McKone entitled “Fly” one sunny Sunday morning on his Jazz FM show. The track captured my mood, love of life and feeling of warmth for that moment with his warm bassy voice, and I managed to see her live at Ronnie Scotts which was magnificent. If it wasn’t for Robbie Vincent playing that track, I’d never have discovered such a beautiful record and seen her perform live with Ronny Jordan supporting! Honestly people, try and find a way to listen to this record
Years later, I was in a record shop (long before .mp3’s) and found Vivienne McKone’s “Fly” record and asked the shop assistant to play it. As soon as the chords started and and Vivienne McKone’s vocals kicked in, the shop assistant, colleagues and my fellow record digger shoppers nodded their heads in appreciation and all sots of converstations started about the beauty of this record. It was the only copy in the shop and obviously I purchased it, leaving the shop knowingly and winking to those around me.
Thanks, Robbie, that was a magnificent record shopping day, and one I’ll never forget, and if it wasn’t for you introducing me to that track I don’t think I’d ever have have heard it. Come back and grace us with more familiar but fresh music garden pieces.
By the way: Kevin, you need to find a way to get your material of old Robbie Vincent shows shared. I’d love to hear what you have, and I do have some old JAzz FM and BBC Radio shows I could share with you.
Please keep this necessary thread going.
Thanks Chris, that post epitomises what so many of us feel about Robbie, and how much we miss hearing him. If you drop us an email (info@radiocafe.co.uk) we’ll share some of our Radio 1 recordings with you, from the days of Hindsight’s “Small Change” and Billy Griffin’s “Believe It Or Not” - Robbie was the only guy playing tracks like these back then.
Rest assured this thread will continue until we have actually found Robbie, and have let him know how many of us appreciate the great contribution he has made to soul music.
Robbie Vincent was (along with Greg Edwards) my main source of soul music when I was at school. The shows on Radio London were unmissable and I would always listen in and sometimes would stay in bed until the show had finished!
It is impossible to imagine that someone who had so much influence, good taste and knowledge of the music isn’t presenting a show still and for those of us of a certain age who remember his shows and for the benefit of those who don’t know this music existed it would be so good to hear him back again, thanks to people like Master J, Victor P, Chris Phillips, Mike T and Mr P for keeping the music alive
Thanks David - yes, for many of us Greg’s and Robbie’s shows were responsible for long shopping lists of must-have records. I’ve fond memories of Robbie playing Bob James Sign Of The Times (in 1980?), one of the first records I ever bought; I also spent years looking for a decent copy of Ronnie Foster’s Argentina.
And now for some good news…
Fellow soul music legend Tony Monson kindly emailed me to say that Robbie is still very much alive and well! He has not ruled out doing a show for Tony’s station, Solar Radio (see our Soul pages for a link to the station), but it seems time and distance is a big factor for him at the moment. So fingers crossed, you never know. Many of us would also love to hear him back on a phone-in too, there really was nobody better at the art of radio.
Hello. What a great idea. Used to love the oldies. The likes of Peter Young, Robbie Vincent, Steve Walsh, Tony Blackburn and Greg Edwards on Jazz FM and Radio London. Always remember listening to Peter Young and him playing Jamiroquai for the 1st time. Seen them 39 times now. Wow, those were the days. Still have about 3,000 vinyl from those days and will never get rid of them. Used to love the old pirates as well. JFM, Solar, TKO, etc. Thank god for the likes of UnknownFM and Klimaxx. What happened to Peter Young and where is Chris Philips? Wicked stuff, real music for real people. Richard (darthfunk)
It truly hurts to think Robbie’s vinyl is just sitting
there with a inch of dust all over them
BLOW THEM OFF and get back out there .
I,ll pick you up and drop you home if you dont fancy the drive in to london
Reading all the comments and I too feel that Robbie should be back on the airwaves.
I have so many fond memories of his shows, like when Maze first came to the UK, just an announcement on his show, tickets sold out within 2 hours, also his interview with Frankie Beverly, Marvin Gaye. I built up my record collection by listening to his shows. My first 12″ being Ray Carless Tarantula Walk (Used my dinner money to pay for records). I used to tape his shows and note down all the records he used to play and write them in the back of my exercise book. Yes I was still in school then.
Also listened to Greg on Fridays and Saturdays and Horizon. Invicta was my Sunday supplement.
I know people have their lives to get on with, just like we all have, but even if RV did one last show, that would be enough for me.
Music moves on just like people.
Keep the funk alive!
Thanks for your input Richard, Andrew and Praful.
Richard - bet that is some record collection! We were lucky to have so many great DJ’s during the 80s providing a real education in good music weren’t we? We’ll soon be profiling some of the other names you mentioned.
Praful - I still have my wants list from the 1980s, and have managed to get hold of many of the items over the years, but still a few I’m looking for. So many of us would love to hear Robbie doing again what he doe so well, if only for one more time.
Andrew - well said!
Paul
I know I am deviating from the main topic, but just wondering, with a site like DVDSpot where you can list your DVD’s has anyone come across a site where you can list your records/wants list. We all love the same music. I know I have missed out on a lot. All the new stuff comes no where close. Apart from Ebay I used to go to Crazy Beat in Upminster to get hold of the classics. Paul glad you kept your wants list. Would be interesting to see what was played at that time.
Going through the comments and alreday noted a few records that I missed
Regards
Praful
Thanks Praful. If you, or anyone else, thinks a “records wants” section would be useful on Radiocafe, we’d certainly consider buidling one in. As a temporary measure, we’ll look to add a section to these Talk pages so that some of us can post our own record wants lists, and will include details of where you may be able to get hold of them (there are many good sources as Gemm, Netsoundsmusic, CDandLP, musicstack and if all else fails eBay or your local Oxfam!).
This should be the place to come for the very best in OUR kind of music, rather than all those sites trying to do everything for everyone. If you have any ideas what you’d like to see included, or if anyone knows of a decent site already doing this, do let us know! Also, if anyone wants to write any articles here or look after any pages on this part of the site, we’d be pleased to hear from you.
As for my own wants list from around 1987, of which Robbie was responsible for so many, looking at it today it includes many items which I still do not have. Here is a small selection of gems I did manage to get hold of, but would never have known about were it not for Robbie, Greg and LWR:
- Hindsight - Small Change
- Curtis Gadson - K-I-S-S Y-O-U (great mellow soul tune)
- Billy Griffin - Believe It Or Not (have a copy of Billy dueting with himself on a Greg Edwards show from the late 80s, incredible!)
- Gwen Guthrie - Save Your Love For Me (only purchased this on 12″ last week!)
- Finis Henderson - Skip To My Lou
- Randy Hall - Slow Starter
Trouble is theses days, where does our wants list come from now? Thank heavens for Greg, Master J and a few others.
Perhaps we can kick off with everyone’s favourite Robbie Vincent tracks. My top 3 would probably be:
- Bob James - Sign Of The Times
- Maze - Love Is The Key
- Ronnie Foster - Argentina
Cheers
Paul
give me a call im sure he is still living in beckenham kent, lets get him back were he belongs .07976245543 chris
Thanks Chris - I’ll give you a call later in the week.
Paul
Hello
I can only agree with all of the contributions.
When I was growing up I always looked forward to the next Robbie Vincent show. There was that kind of excitement wondering what gems he would play each week. I would stop whatever I was doing in anticipation and would do nothing else other than listen and write down lists of what he had played. My musical taste and ‘ryhthm’ buds were tuned and developed by the wide array of music he would play. Even now the jingles ‘If it moves funk it’ etc still are fresh in the memory and it would be fantastic to relive those days again. We are all so keen to see Robbie back because it reminds us of our youth and the exciting music scene at the time with so much original and unique talent. Many of the legends were prolific at that time, Teddy P, Phyllis Hyman, Leroy Hutson, Roy Ayers, Rick James etc. Maybe Robbie is happy in his retirement-I know he had some heart problems a few years back…but it would be nice to hear from the man himself. I know he made a guest appearance on Solar Radio.com with Tony Monson last year but unfortunately I missed it. I may email Tony Monson(another Legend of the soul music radio scene by the way) and try and find out if he knows what Robbie is up to. To all of you who feel the same way as I do…keep playing the music…..keep loving the music….Soul Music lives on and always will….
I used to tape Robbie’s Radio London Saturday soul and disco shows in the early 80’s, when I lived in Battersea and Notting Hill, eventually took the cassettes with me to Italy where I now live, AND I STILL PLAY THEM TODAY, ‘cos they’re miles better than most of wot’s on the radio these days! Superb listening! Bring Robbie back, nobody does it better… Let’s hear a JazzFunk40 for July 2008 PLEASE!
Robbie Vincent was a legend!! Fantastic DJ who played the best Soul and Jazz. Absolutely nothing on radio these days compares! Heart FM on Friday and Saturday nights do a good job reliving the 70’s and 80’s, but the icing on the cake would be Robbie Vincent. Robbie, wherever you are, please come back!!
Robbie Vincent was an epitome of Music and entertainment. I mean the best DJ or presenter I’ve heard over the radio who has used the medium to make people not only listen to music but encourage them to enjoy the best part of any music (smooth Jazz) and spread the WORD. The performance on JazzFM was exemplary. The influence on Jazz Music industry was immense that I couldn’t understand why after leaving JazzFm there was no any major attempt from main beneficiaries of the industry (Jazz Artists) to get him back on track. Before him I never knew how many good Jazz Artists were home-grown and after he left I was only left with the few he made me know. I will love to be part of any attempt to get this guy back! During his time I ditched online purchase and had to go with my wife to Oxford Street to buy some of his recommendations in 2001 - we still listen to those compilations together with our children. They were excellent!
I listened to the great man on radio london in the late 70’s early 80’s and frequented Caister soul weekends and all dayers, following him and Chris Hill.
I met him at one weekender, his music knowledge is incredible and he is a great entertainer.
When he did his talk shows i remember that the phone lines were not working one day so he got his record collection out and treated his listeners to the best soul/jazz funk around.
Bring the man back , we need him.
Hi to the R(&)B lovers
I have already sent to the Robbie campaign!! We need the proper R & B brought back. I totally agree with ALL THE ABOVE. None of the mainstream realise that such a genre exists. RV introduced a lot of people to the good stuff. When he went to Radio 1 on Sunday’s the nothern soul mob were shown the good gear, No offence to the northern mob, but we had it for years! At least you got some of it!!!! You were blessed
EDUCATED ON R&B
REMEMBER THE SAYING…………’IF IT MOVES……..
BRING HIM BACK
I like many others used to tape Robbie’s shows on Radio London, than Radio 1, Jazz FM etc. I am sure I have a few lying around, if I haven’t taped over them. I enjoyed it when Chris Hill would come on as a guest as he too had his own unique style.
I got a buzz out of anything new he played, American or UK based. A lot of UK bands got the exposure through Robbie’s shows, including Freeeze, Second Image, Central Line, Light of the World, Linx, Junior, Heatwave and many others, and made them the success they were. His interviews with Donald Byrd, Marvin Gaye, Frankie Beverly from Maze, are legendary, as if they were only yesterday.
Greg is doing a grand job on his Friday/Saturday shows in keeping the funk alive
I am glad there are still like minded people who are still passionate about the music that was played 20-30 years ago. The same music that has stood the test of time and still sounds fresh compared to the current stuff. I still get the same buzz I used to get back in the 80’s whenever I hear music from that era now.
I truly feel we need to pay a tribute to Robbie for bringing so much joy to listeners, that he greatly deserves, and that he is not forgotten. Even a short stint on radio or a live gig would be a major event.
Those who are in contact with Robbie, please please can we have Robbie back
For me, it was Robbie the phone in host that I tended to favour. He was a legendary music broadcaster, who was loved and followed by many Soul fans, but I listened to the phone in shows on Radio London, then LBC.
Robbie had a great brain on him and just seemed to have such skill at drwaing the point from callers.
Sadly, I missed his brief return to Radio London in 2003/04. I have a feeling that if he wanted to be on the radio he would be, so guess that he is enjoying retirement.
I too heard that he lived around Beckenham (no doubt the posh part) and would love to hear him on speech radio again some day.
Hi Paul,
You probably know this but just in case…it may interest you to know that Robbie managed the Brit Funk band Second Image in the early 1980’s. The band won the Freddie Starr showcase and were promised their own one off TV show. It never happened. Instead the comedy duo “Hale & Pace” who placed 3rd (I think) were given their own TV special and the rest is history. Shortly after this disappointing period the group disbanded. I should know, I played sax with the band for a few years. We loved Robbie but felt let down by the Beeb for what we felt was an unfair decision to cancel a televised opportunity to showcase more of the band’s talent.
The band has never had a reunion, but I’m sure if Robbie requested it we would.
He was truly a legend. His knowledge on R&B an Soul music was encyclopaedic. I remember seeing his extensive record collection at his home in Beckenham and being deeply impressed by his genuine passion for the music.
Cheers,
Lloyd
Lloyd
I was not aware Second Image were managed by Robbie. I remember the Freddie Starr Showcase and was the first time I saw Second Image on TV. I also remember they opened for Maze as well. Second Image had to be the most consistent UK Jazz Funk Bands around. Having their own show would have been a platform for other UK bands.
I few years a go, I sent an email to Greg to maybe have a “Where Are They now” kind of theme on his show. Believe it or not a few weeks later he had Light of The World on his show. I would definitely like to know what has happened to other bands like Second Image, Central Line etc which made the UK scene that more exciting.
Regards
Robbie helped shape my musical tastes for many years - ’bout time he got some national airwave time …. does anyone know whether any playlists for Robbie’s R1 shows exist?
bring back robbie where is he now ?
The Bring Back Robbie Vincent campaign is hotting up now, tell your friends and fellow soul lovers that we are now on a major mission for the return of the greatest DJ ever. As many have said , we really need to bring some quality music back to the radio , lets keep the campaign hummin..
IF IT MOVES..FUNK IT..
Patrick Munroe..Frenchies..Belvedere..81 Club Bournemouth..Pantiles..
Really good to see thank this campaign is going as it is quite evident that when Robbie was longer on the airwaves we were deprived of listening to ‘great music’ from ‘great man’.
I am looking forward to the ’second coming’of Robbie as can only be a matter of time.
Using a title of a Charles Earland track..Let the music play!
Bob.
(LacyLacy,Royalty,Goldmine)
I was the guitarist with Second Image and I just wanted to send some love to Robbie. He was indeed our manager more or less from day one and secured 2 record deals for us with Polydor and MCA. I remember him as a down to earth and passionate guy who deeply felt his music. He was also a very likeable and intelligent man as his talk shows proved. Being young and naive we used to give him a hard time which I suppose is a standard thing with bands and their managers but we always regarded him as a friend.
Last saw Robbie, New Years Eve 2000 at a little club in Ascot. He put together a great selection that brought back all the joy of the 80s shows.
He was consistently voted No1 DJ in NME or Melody Maker (can’t remember which), in the 80s.
Remember his endearing expressions “Robbie says”, “We have the technology”, “If it moves…”
Shame he didn’t have the face for TV in the era of pretty boys, could’ve brought much more of the right stuff to a wide audience.
I loved both Robbies, supreme purveyor of great music and highly entertaining chat show host.
Hope sincerely that he still wants to share some time with a grateful audience.
I’ll be watching this space.
“First time caller Robbie”
The magic of Robbie Vincent over the airwaves on LBC. Legendry stuff
just discovered this site. totally agree with everything thats being said. For the masses of lovers of outstanding soul/funk/jazz, Robbie was the consumate D.J,finger on the pulse always. no question.Who can forget his constant playing of ‘The Grand Design’ by Bernard Oattes.Happy memories of swaying to that one at Caistor.Luckily I have the C.D.,but where are we supposed to hear all the fab stuff if no-one is playing it. For us lovers of Robbies genre of ear candy,we need him back on the airways. Wherever you are, please deliver us from the dross which professes to be ’soul’ music. Or is the ‘golden age’ of truly fabulous music really over?
P.S.a little tip.One of Robbies favourites was( & possibly still is),Swing out Sister.Their last three albums are FANTASTIC.Robbie did a re-mix of their sublime track ‘Alpine Crossing’. Check it out.
PLEASE,PLEASE come back Robbie, all is forgiven! We, & I speak for your legions of fans, all luv ya.
Wow Roz! - I am a huge SOS fan! And so is Robbie? Terrific - This all fits. I grew up in the Lincolnshire countryside, just ten fields away from Corinne Drewery but never knew it at the time. I also used to go to Cleethorpes Northern Soul All-Niters but never realised Corinne was there too on the same crowded dance floor.
Then I moved to London, and throughout the 80’s, Robbie was the radio DJ who delivered a funky weekend to me every Saturday, then in ‘86, this fab band appeared from nowhere called Swing Out Sister, whose music strangely always reminded me of home, though I didn’t know why.
So where can I hear Robbie’s Alpine Crossing remix? Wow, it must be good. And speaking of alpine crossings, I actually bought my copy of SDITN in Switzerland…
He’s got to come back now Froggy has gone……………..
Sad as it is I can understand his reluctance to return. The sad loss of Froggy reminds us all how the lifestyle can take it’s toll, but I have some great memories. From the days of the Pink Elephant in southgate to many Appalling Talent Contests at Caister. I still listen expectantly to Solar for any news of a one off show.
Good luck with the campaign
Keep me posted
Scott.
When greeted with the words…’First Time Caller Robbie’…He always responded with…
‘A Big night for us both!’
Does he actually know about this thread / forum?
Ian D
Bring Back Robbie!
Who can forget Robbie’s ‘feel good factor’ and playing tracks like Chuck Jackson’s ‘All Over The World’, JT Taylor ‘Feel the Need’, Misty Oldland’s ‘Got Me a Feeling’, the aforementioned ‘Grand Design’ by Bernard Oattes, ‘Fly’ by Vivienne McKone, Lou Rawl’s brilliant ‘Stop Me from Starting this Feeling’, Mondo Kane’s ‘New York Afternoon’, as well as the likes of Zapp - where can we hear such great stuff thse days?

where you can download various snippets of Robbie’s shows. You just need to register and away you go!
Anyone got/know any other snippets or shows that can be accessed?
Wow how pleased to find this site-I 2 have greatly missed Robbie and my box of cassettes going back to ‘77 are the most treasured item I posess and will never fail to bring a bif fat cheesy smile to my face, recalling much love and larfter of great times gone by at the very fantastic Purley’s, Caister’s, Ally Pally, etc, etc…..
Yes - Robbie please if only for a one off show there is nothing on the waves at the moment to compare. I was also so sad to hear of the news of the great Froggy, he will be truly missed.
Does anyone remember Robbie playing ‘Aquamarine’ by Santana ?? wot a grate summer that was…..
Please keep me posted
Much love
Great to read everyones memories of Robbie, the radio shows & gigs. I will always be eternally grateful to Robbie for bringing my ears the music of “Dave Valentin” enough said!!.
I can’t help feel that the black music industry in the UK & US owe a massive dept of gratitude to Robbie & Greg for bringing all the great music to the UK, all those record sales!! & what would our kids be listening to now if they hadn’t?. Take all your current dance DJ’s/producers,remixers, would they have such a massive audience?. Don’t get me wrong, I love what those guys do, I love my house music, but the powers that be need to show their respect with some sort of award for services to the industry, you know the score, a MOBO type award or something. Anyhow enough of my ramblings, just need to say big love to all you guys posting your thoughts, all at UnknownFM.net, MN2S & Defected.

You can get snippets of Robbie’s show at;

Who can forget Robbie’s ‘feel good factor’ and such tunes as Chuck Jackson’s ‘All Over the World’, Lou Rawls brilliant ‘Stop Me from Starting this Feeling’, Mondo Kane’s infectious ‘New York Afternoon’, and other Robbie gems like Misty Oldland’s ‘Got me a Feeling’, O’Jay’s ‘My Favourite Person’, Gary Taylor’s ‘Time after Time’, and the aforementioned ‘Grand Design’ by Bernard Oattes, and Vivienne McKone’s ‘Fly’, and then later on the Temptations’ ‘Stay’, Patti Austin’s ‘In & out of Love’, and Randy Crawford’s delightful ‘I’d be an Angel’.
Bring back Robbie, the feel good factor, music for a candlelit dinner, and decent soul music!
robbie vincent for me was brilliant, back in the early 80’s on radio 1 i used to listen every week without fail, he opened my eyes to loads of jazz, funk & soul which i still love today, no chat no advertising just pure music. god bless robbie
Could not agree more - Robbie helped define my musical taste in the early 80’s and before, and he never lost it right up to his last shows on Jazz FM etc. Maybe the guys at Solar should be picking up the phone. And as for the old Radio London phone in show in the 70’s, that was essential listening as I think it was before the days of delay loops and after pub chucking out time - a lethal combo that Robbie handled with great humour.
CAMPAIGN TO BRING BACK ROBBIE VINCENT
I grew up in the 1980s on Radio London listening to the:
1. Robbie Vincent Telephone Programme talk show every weekday from 12pm – 2pm
2. Robbie Vincent Soul Show every Saturday from 10am – 12pm
I then progressed to the Robbie Vincent Radio 1 FUNK + SOUL SHOW from 1988-1997 whose motto was IF IT MOVES FUNK IT. I still have the original sticker(s).
I taped all RADIO 1 shows faithfully.
PS: I also grew up on Greg Edwards from 1981-1997 and also faithfully taped all his shows.
I also regularly bought BLUES & SOUL Magazine from 1994 – 1988 and Robbie Vincent won DJ of the year faithfully.
I finally met Robbie Vincent + his wife + twin sons in 2002 in Croydon at a one off Soul show at The Cartoon pub.
I wrote him a 7 page letter in 2003 explaining my HISTORY growing up on him + he replied with signed photo.
I listened to him when he was on JAZZ FM from 2002 – 2005. I was devastated to see GCAP Media destroyed Jazz FM with this useless SMOOTH FM station which plays non Jazz+Funk+Soul crap.
I have searched in vain for Robbie Vincent and the results are as follows:
1. I bought the name www.robbievincent.com
& will work on this soon
2. I have setup a FACEBOOK ROBBIE VINCENT group
3. I contacted JIM COLVIN who said he would find RV for me
4. I met Pete Young at SOULBROTEHR RECORDS Putney who told me RV has setup business with his wife.
5. I will look at the Electoral Register to find RV. I believe he lives in Kent???
6. I will contact Tony Blackburn’s agent as I believe they had the same one
7. ANY HELP WOULD BE APPRECIATED

Thank you for your time and consideration
Yours sincerely

Hey Jude,
With a quest like that, you’ll send poor Robbie into hiding
But seriously, I’d love to hear some of those old shows again. Maybe you can host them, given your IT skills.
Respect

My Sunday Evenings were religiously spent with Robbie - I can recall Anita Baker winning Robbie’s Best Live Show of the Year Award voted by the listener’s (in 1986 or maybe ‘87) and Robbie prominsing to play the concert in its’ entirity the next Sunday Evening. Having attended the concert in question I took a bus into town on the Saturday and purchased a blank TDK C90 from Our Price. On the Sunday Evening I sat down and recorded the the show, I’ve still got the tape - listening to her rendition of ‘Watch Your Step’ live never fails to give me goosepimples.
Also I can remember hearing for the first time a young and unknown soul singer (Robbie’s words, not mine!) called Rick Astley sing ‘Never Gonna give You Up’ late on a Sunday Night Show.
Good times.
Steve
I would like to add my name and my dads name to the list trying to get Robbie back on our airways. Some things cross all age barriers and quality DJs like Robbie, few and far between, did it for me and my dad ! My dad still has old tapes of Robbie Vincent shows, though they are wearing thin due to being over played ! GET ROBBIE BACK … LIFE JUST ISNT THE SAME WITHOUT HIM !
Yeah I agree with all the above. We need Robbie Vincent back on the air.I recall with fondness his shows for radio 1 in the 80’s(sadly due to not living in the London area,I didn’t get to hear his radio London shows).Such a great presenter and a lover of quality music. I remember feeling quite angry with radio 1 when the powers that be decided to finish the show in 1989.I was left in a musical wilderness for a while.
Also I felt that-aside from Andy peebles who also did a great show-all later soul shows didn’t have the same quality music selection and care especially the dissapointing Trevor nelson show which played mostly sub standard hip-hop and samey r’n'b
Although the musical landscape has changed quite a bit since this time-as far as black music is concerned-I’m sure he could still pull out some class music even today.Come back Robbie we need you mate!
P.S Talking of Second Image I loved their”Starting again” tune from back in the day.
Music, as it should be, never is there a hint of trouble at disco’s with music from this period, robbie vincent was simply awesome
who can forget ‘music for a candle lit dinner’
Come back man, get in touch with Richard Routledge and make an appearance at 1 of his disco’s.
Fine DJ playing gorgeous music…. I welcome his return !!!!!!
For ages i have been trying to find robbie vincent on the airwaves, like everyone else when i was in my early 20s when i listend to robbie,he was brilliant !…bring back ROBBIE VINCENT
“Music for a candle lit dinner” “If it moves funk it” “Robbie Vincent play that jazz!”
Robbie was such a great professional and simply the best. Please come back Robbie and play those tunes again. His telephone programme on the old Radio London was also the best!
Hi Adam(post no 41-29/3/08.just returned from a holiday,so only just caught up with the site again.so pleased you agreed with my comments, very kind.So excited to meet another SOS fan! i knew i wasnt mad! OK-Robbies mix of ‘Alpine Crossing’ is on ‘Pure Smooth Jazz’.(2002).Let me know if u cant get hold of it & i’ll try 2 sort something out regarding getting u a copy.
Totally agreeing with all the latest comments.Yes, life does move on & we are all entitled to our lives, and god knows, RV certainly deserves his,but its really only a tiny selfish part of us dyed in the wool fans who want a little bit more of the man!
I too thought Robbie Vincent was fantastic to listen to on Sunday Nights. I still have the recording of his last show on Radio London - The sound of sunday night?
I live in Kent and the signal was poor - unlike digital today!
I cant belive what we have to listen to today, like many I took a lot of Robbies tapes around the world with me on holidays starting to get a bit damaged need new ones please come back.
i met robbie vincent in his house last week

Tell us more please Mark?????????
Bring Back Robbie…where are u? does any body know if Robbie is aware we’re tring to
get him back on the airwaves ?
Swing out sister..Alpine Crossing..quality tune, i’ve got the pure smooth album its on, and i’m pretty sure you’d pick it up on a large HMV store, or Soul Brother Records in Putney…
Patrick Munroe..Frenchies..81 Club..
Coudn`t Robbie at least come out and MC for Frankie and the boys in September a genuine `whit sox` night.
A huge chunk of whats in my collection is down to Robbie.
Artists like - Roy Ayers, Patrice Rushen, Peter White, Chris Standring…endless List
Sat or Sun evenings on BBC Radio 1, Sat lunchtimes on BBC Radio London (Awesome)
As a student I was distracted (attracted!) by his shows plus Greg on Saturdays and Invicta on sundays.
I once wrote to his all winners show and he selected one from my ”long, long list”
-The Love I Lost by Harold Melvin & The Bluenotes.
Not having Robbie on the radio is a loss for us all. I have mentioned in the past
on a podcast (smoothgroovers.com) how nice it would be to have him on the radio again.
So I join the Chorus….. Bring Back Robbie!!!!
Just want to support Prof’s sentiments.
Come back Robbie we need you to reset the current world of stolen rifts!
I believe Smooth Groovers are still keeping the flame alive!
http://www.smoothgroovers.com
Please track the man down and persuade him to continue spreading the vibes.
Although our bodies may have become weaker and creakier, our ears and souls still need fine tuning.
i sorted Robbies records on a saturday for his show..and was receptionist for Radio London (happy days)….Robbie is and was great…individual, unpredictable and truly special….i have great memories of him and i would love to hear him again.
Hello Folks
Thanks to ALL those asking me to get the tapes of his shows converted.
SO GREAT TO hear from so many people.
I will GET that done soon [already converted all my 40 12 inchers to CD]. I will then put them on the website for you FREE….all his Radio 1 Shows.
Apologies for the delay. LIFE eh!
As per finding this man …. not an easy task…. someone says he lives in BECKENHAM Kent….. if true I will GO & KNOCK ON HIS DOOR…. if I find him on www.192.com
ROBBIES behaviour of being a “REBEL” ….entered my BLOOD and is still there today. I pity this new generation thinking that shooting each other is cool
Jude
PS: I still own www.robbievincent.com and will get doing this as well.
So MUCH TO DO
1. CONVERT TAPES
2. FIND ROBBIE
3. WEBSITE
4. Scan all my BLUES & SOUL magazines from 1984-94 that shows RV as DJ OF THE YEAR
WHAT’S THE TIME ROBBIE? Certainly not time to retire. Fortunately I have a fairly good collection of Robbie Radio Recordings I made over the years to stop me going insane: Radio 1 - The Sound of Sunday Night, and various JazzFM/JFM shows, now conveniently converted to MP3. However, what I wouldn’t give for some fresh music tips from the great selector.
Daren,
I have been trying to track down the Sound of Sunday Night show’s for years! any help in finding these would be a dream come true!!!
Many thanks
Steve (stephenb100@hotmail.com)
Finally, I’ve decided to put ‘pen to paper’ and add my comments. I was (am) an avid fan of Robbie Vincent. Robbie please come back!
Would any of you be interested in swapping cd’s? i have a few from my rather good collection (though i say so myself), that i would be happy to offload.Or failing that, does anyone know where i could sell them?way too good to chuck away, just dont listen to them anymore.
Roz,
I’d be interested in swapping CDs with you. I have some JazzFM and Radio1 Shows. equating to a good few hours of content. Whatever you do, don’t chuck ‘em away!
On a separate note, does anybody have archive recordings of Robbie’s LBC phone in radio shows?
Roz,
I’m happy to buy them if they are Robbie show CD’s
‘Less hits, more good music’ happy memories of the late 70’s, listening to Robbie on London Satdee lunchtime, even remember the phone number 01 486 7744!! In the days before tape recorders and radios were integrated and I used to have my old cassette recorder with its twin microphone (so technically advanced!) in front of the speakers on me Mums radiogram in the mock teak cabinet. Used to go to the Royalty in Southgate, the Cali in Dunstable and Friday lunchtimes and Sunday evenings at Crackers in Wardour Street. He introduced me to such gems as Soul Village by Walter Bishop Jr, The Sea Lion by Grover, Holiday by Mandrill and all the greats like Roy Ayers, Maze (still got the marl grey tour T shirt with the navy sleeves from ‘83) Crown Heights Affair, Brass Construction the list just goes on and on. Would really love to know how he is doing these days.
I have been a Robbie fan for years and his radio london show was an inspiration back then. I have searched the internet on and off for years to try and find some old tapes of his shows, it would be great if there was a website where you could download mp3’s of them, I’m sure they would be as popular as any compilation album.
I have just one, which was one of the “all winners” shows I would be willing to contribute? not the full show but over 2 hours worth. How about it anyone?
regards
Steve St James
I hope this works…
Here’s a snippet of that glorious Vivienne McKone track from Robbie’s show which I eventually managed to find where I had the whole shop (including the owner and fellow record diggers nodding their heads in appreciation:
Vivienne McKone Intro
and if the link works, I’ll upload the outro
Chris
Works for me, Chris. That’s a smooth one!
Not the outro, but a link to an old
Soul Show from 1985
Have a Happy Listen
Come back Robbie!
Thanks Chris. It works for me too.
ive just been listening to greg edwards on gold on my computer, here in bergerac in france and it brings it all back, robbie, streatham, fri and sat nights, the soull station that was radio london, the killing of that and the murder of jazz fm to junk station….greg is doing a grand job,we need robbie as well…anything i can do in france….hes not here in bergerac is he????
”FUNK CLOUDS OVER LONDON TOWN”
Oh the sound of Robbie on a saturday morning after a heavy night at the RIO in DIDCOT, Funky Cowpat land as he affectionately called it, back in the days when i was strugling to work out how to use a calculater!!, but had no problem in taping every show & editing out the mid show news, me MAM bless her would even be at the ready to stop / start recording if i was in the bath, ‘haha’.
Never missed any of them & still have them all dated & boxed up somewhere in the loft, i also foned me MAM when i was on my hols after working out time zones to make sure it was recorded’ fondly remember laying on my sunbed with my GHETTO BLASTER at the ready to play a pre-recorded show bang on time around the pool in IBIZA, MEMORIES i have & would love them to become alive again, so come on ROBBIE , ” MAKE MY DREAM A REALITY”, i would be honoured to have you play at SPIRIT OF SOUL @ BAR12 in HATFIELD where we have monthly special guests from SOLAR & STARPOINT,

Do you remember some of the jingles Robbie had…
“Rick James knows Robbie Vincent has essential rhythms. You know what? Rick James is never wrong!”
“Mavis Staples knows Robbie Vincent has essential rhythms. It’s the gospel truth!”
I’m sure there was a Chaka Khan one as well.
Here are some jingles and random Robbie Vincent snippets including a corker of a call to his legendary LBC Nightline show:
JazzFM intro
LBC Nightline jingle
LBC Nightline bus queues call
Vivienne McKone outro

One jingle that sticks in my mind, that I didn’t really understand at the time was;
“Hey Bobby, Why do you like soul food?” “Because it makes me haaaapy!”
Was it someone famous?
bobby womack it was he was referring to,he used to play a lot of the womacks records..

Found it it was by Billy Crystal and grabbed it at these record fairs
also
“If it Moves, Funk it”
great times
Robbie was one of the first to play Pieces of A Dream “Ice Cream”
Trawled through all the specialist record shops in London, Groove Records/Bluebird Records etc and none of them heard of it or had it. Thought I was going mad until finally after 20 years I managed to track it down.
I have some tapes of Robbies show but think they are worn out now, by too much playing
Would be great if others can share their tape collection via mp3 etc
Have to agree with Praful, if anyone is up for sharing their Robbie shows on mp3?
Steve
Thanks to my brother Carl for bringing this site to my attention. I remember Top Rank days (Reading) ‘The Night Owl’ upstairs and Northern Soul being played on the big floor downstairs. Robbie guested there once (4 or 5 tracks I think) one of them was Hamilton Bohannon ‘foot stomping music’ Never to be forgotton.
Happy memories of RV on Radio London (being in the west of Reading we could pick up the broadcast!!)
Bring him back and give him carte blanche for the track listings “if it moves……..”
Check out……. http://www.lounge-radio.com
Great for jazzy/brazillian/downtempo/funk.

Well I’d definitely be up for sharing my Robbie Vincent material. In fact, I’m in the process of creating a webpage (nothing too dramatic or exclusive) just links to some of the material I have for you all to enjoy. I hope to have something ready over the bank holiday.
Any others want to share their content?
Hey Chris, just tell me where to send my music and you can share them. thanks for the fast reply.
Chris that’s great news, I’m happy to share the one and only winners show that Robbie did while on Jazz FM.
regards
Steve
Hi Chris and Steve,

Just click on my name above it will take you there!
CHeers
Steve
Brilliant, worked fine for me, great tracks!
Steve
Good on you, Steve. Absolute quality. Appreciate that. I’ll definitely work on creating a resource for you to enjoy some old shows I have. Hope to have something ready and available latest Sunday, but as soon as I manage to convert, upload and create something, I’ll let you know.
We are following this debate with great interest.
Robbie has always inspired us and also provided great insight into the development of adult contemporary music - not sure why it was called that but with the term ‘Smooth Jazz’/Jazz Fusion it helps to cross genre’s.
We are now into the 3rd year of our show and there is not a show that goes by without us humbly mentioning Robbie.
We are happy to champion the cause. Actually, we mentioned this discussion on our most recent show.
In summary, if you wish to ‘air’ your views we are happy to broadcast them on a collaborative basis on our show.
In addition, take any requests.
It is most annoying that Jazz FM has gone and Smooth is just… - Lets not go there!
In the US the selective demise of some Smooth Jazz channels is in my view down to the lack of imagination of some of the advertisers.
As mentioned by a previous contributor to this discussion - Guitars, Saxes and Soul events organised with Robbie’s support showed just what is possible and the international interest in this music & related genres.
In summary, we the consumers/listeners need to drive the content we like.
Therefore, I suggest support for all the musicians and independent shows so that we can make some of those commercial sponsors realise that we are fed up of being fed the same commercial stuff.
Steve, Chris & Dr Groove.
Many thanks for the feedback. I have added even more tracks and will keep adding over the next few days.
If any other Robbie fans wants to share their Robbie material, and not sure how to do it. A free hotmail account gives you 5Gig of free disc space on your “skydrive” upload your shows and share with us! it’s free.
Hope this starts the ball rolling!
Hi Guys, Inspired by Steve B, as a taster I have included the following gems for you all to download on mp3. I have many more but it takes a while to upload. I will upload my Jazzfm “all winners” show once I have edited the file a bit.

Steve,
Well that’s us on our way! they all worked fine! it’s hard to type and dance around the room at the same time… oh! how the memories are flooding back! thanks for uploading the files….
come on everyone lets get this Robbie campaign moving….. if it funks…share it!
Steve B, just downloaded Sausoliyo - Grover Washington Jnr, it’s funny how sometimes you don’t recall the name of the track but instantly recognise it. This is one that Robbie used to play frequently but I have never captured it till now….thanks for a great tune! if there’s any that you have been after let me know in case I have them?
Steve St James
Hi Guys,
Robbie Vincent Jazzfm show is now uploaded, hope this starts a landslide of Rv shows!!
Steve St James
Steve,
thanks for the comments about Sausoliyo. I have lots more to put up. I have added two files “no clue1″ and “no clue2″ any help with these on the artist would be great. All came from the same Robbie show as the tracks upload. I also added a file - Hardwork from I think the together brothes…need help with this one.
Got the JazzFm show just fantastic to listen to after all this time.
And with Chris’s files over the weekend it’s gona be a great holiday “back to the old School”
can’t wait.
Hope some others start uploading!
Hi Steve, your first no clue track is by Jeff Lorber, called “the magician” from the 1982 album “its a fact” great line up of musicians on the album too
& the Grover track is “Sausalito”
Re the “Hardwork” track there was a similar track name by John Handy back in the 70’s
Good luck with the uploads guys, all those mp3’s saves going through the record collection
Regards Andy
Andy,
I have been looking for that track since 82! many thanks for the info now I just have to find it somewhere for my collection!
Steve,
give the guys at Soulbrouther records Putney a call, they’ll sort you out. Haven’t got their number to hand so just google them & look on the web site, there’s a search facility on there too. If you get the chance pop in to the shop, there are so many albums you will want to buy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Hi All,
Another day another upload, these ones are in a folder called “new batch” and contain some really great tracks and memories. I’ll do some more over the next few days but would like some more input from others? C’Mon!!
regards
Steve St James
Andy - many thanks I’ll check it out
Steve I have also uploaded another batch of Robbie tracks! I have loads more too but hope other fans will start to upload their shows etc…
If anyone has Pieces Of A Dream - It’s Time For Love ( a massive Robbie track) let me know I’m looking for it!
Thanks guys for all the uploaded tracks and all the work thats been going on with this forum I don’t remember many of these tracks but will enjoy listening
To Steve B I think that Hard Work track was by John Handy although I haven’t had a chance to listen to your one yet
Found that Jeff Lorber album on CD at:
http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0001926PM?ie=UTF8&tag=lorbercom-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=B0001926PM
not cheap though! If not try www.discogs.com always good for old tunes
Great to see so much interest in Robbie and his amazing music - he really did have a massive impact on the soul scene in the UK. Loving some of the tracks that are being mentioned here, too.
In response to the request from some of you here - in particular Praful who said as follows: “has anyone come across a site where you can list your records/wants list” - we have now built such a site for you!
Here it is: http://www.findthatrecord.com/
As part of the Campaign For Real Music, our aim is to make finding that rare record as easy as possible.
There are two ways to do it: on the main page, we’ve listed all the very best music marketplace search engines on one page, organised by category (currently we’ve only done GENERAL and SOUL); and then there is a simple message board for all of us to post our wants lists, which is fully searchable.
You can also post suggestions for other stores to be added to the site.
Plus you can put your lists of items you want to sell on there too, and we are happy for any independent record sellers to post lists of items for sale. We’ll be nothing more than the middle man with no input or involvement in the sale at all (or fee!). So please spread the word.
Again, this is a free service to promote out love of music how it should be heard, which is on vinyl - we believe records are all set for a revival this year.
Personally, I spend a lot of my time trying to hunt down records which I couldn’t find/afford back in the days when I used to listen to them on Robbie’s and Greg’s shows, and virtually all of them are out there for sale somewhere. This will hopefully make it as easy as possible for me - and other like-minded vinyl junkies - to find those rarities and much sought after gems. So if you know of any other music enthusiasts, do spread the word.
Praful and others - thanks for the suggestion, which helps us continually improve this site. Do let us know if you have any comments or other suggestions.
Thanks again to all for being part of the Campaign For Real Music.
Paul@Radiocafe
Hi Dave C - many thanks. Glad you enjoyed the tracks they took me 10 years to track down, find good quality, and then find the extended mixes! Ah! what we do for our music! I’ve got another 19 or so on hold!
thanks to Steve St james and Chris, I think we have given this board a bit of a jump start!
Radiocafé - awesome!
Want to see some of Robbies Sunday shows uploaded! so if you have them get sharing……..
come on JUDE JOHN LOBO!!!!!! lead the way we are with you!!!
Steve
Wondering if perhaps our next addition to Radiocafe is a central place for everyone to load up and share their favourite radio shows of old… kind of fits in nicely with the Radiocafe theme and original aims of the site (plus we have around 1000 cassettes of various different shows from over the years!)
If you think this is something we ought to do, again we will try and rise to the challenge!
Paul
Andy, I have uploaded in my folder “new batch” Jeff Lorber’s the magician from the album it’s a fact… took me all night to find the orignal… it’s not the same as my unknown track “no clue1.mp3″
so it’s back to searching..any help would be great to track down the artist!
Paul - I think we will need a central store for all the tracks/ radio shows…. good idea if radiocafe can supply - but you’ll need a lot of disc space.
Steve
This is really gathering momentum - thanks for all the shares, guys - awesome!
Totally agree, Radiocafe, that perhaps the next addition should be a central place for everyone to upload and share radio shows of old. This will require a lot of bandwith/disk space especially considering you have around 1000 cassettes of shows.
I’m happy to help out with storing material and hosting shows on my own website if you have issues with bandwith/disk space, etc.
I’ll uplolad and get some of my Robbie Vincent meterial in order to share with you all as soon as possible. Hopefully not later than Monday. Once this is done, perhaps it can act as a temporary portal/central share of old shows?
Watch this space and listen up for some classic Robbie material…
Chris
Chris,
Thanks for the offer and giving up your time to help with files etc… I can’t wait to listen to some of the old time show’s.
Steve
Bring back Robbie!!!
Hi Guys,
I have uploaded some more tracks to the “new batch folder”. Along with all the other suggestions what about a “wants list”? I’ve been looking for Beau Williams - All because of you for a while, if anyone has a decent version of it let me know?
Really great to see some movement on the uploading front, keep up the good work!
Many thanks to Steve B and Chris!!
Steve St James

Hi Steve St James.
I uploaded to my “more folder” Beau Williams - All because of you 1986, enjoy mate!
Steve
Steve B, thanks very much mate! I had this track on mp3 a while ago but a pc crash killed about 30% of my valued tracks, needless to say I have plenty of backups of all my tunes now.

Hi Steve St James
I enjoyed listening to your downloads. Quality is brill
Most I have on vinyl
Some I clean forgot and brings back memories
Again RV was responsible for my collections
I want to down load some of my stuff as well
I have some Jap JAzz which RV used to play as well, including Pacific Jam (recently going for £100) and Skipjack
What is best way of downloading from Vinyl to mp3?
cheers
Praful
Hi Praful,
Thanks for the comments, you can transfer your vinyl directly to a pc with this gadjet below:
http://www.firebox.com/index.html?dir=firebox&action=product&pid=1401&src_t=wnp
It’s about £76 quid and it’s basically a turntable with a USB connection. If not you could plug a tape recorder into your pc and record from the headphone socket?
Glad to hear you have Pacific Jam and a few others to share.

Steve St James

To Steve St James
I have got the Decoupage Puerto Rico track on a compilation album and have Light of the World Swingin’ on 12″ (only bought that a couple of weeks ago from Discogs thanks to Retro Russ for reminding me of that one - check out www.retroruss.com guys) but haven’t yet converted any of my vinyl to MP3s - I will have a go soon and see if I can upload some stuff to help out
Nice one Dave C, look forward to it!

Steve St James
Dave C: we met up with Retro Russ at Soul AM’s 6th birthday party this year - another pioneer of the good music cause and an overall top man.
Incidentally, anyone who loves their 80s soul funk and disco a la Robbie Vincent stylee (”stylee” being one of Robbie’s favourite words of course), then Master J’s Soul AM show on Unknown FM, Sundays 10am - midday, is as good as it gets. We are pleased to support his dedication to keeping the soul alive, and who else these days plays all their tunes on original vinyl? Yes, not a single CD. We’ve not heard a better selection since the days of Robbie’s Saturday shows.
Past editions of the show, including the entire Dance Decade which features just about every decent soul tune from ‘78 to ‘88, can be found on his website http://www.soulunique.net and on the Radiocafe soul pages (www.radiocafe.co.uk/soul).
To all: good to know there is so much interest in classic soul and jazz funk, which is badly overlooked these days by the mainstream, save for a few exceptions (such as Greg still doing his thang on Gold - 6 hours non-stop these days, too).
Thanks again to everyone’s contribution here.
Cheers
Langers @ Radiocafe
If you want to hear some classic Jazz Funk, Robbie Style - We’ve just released an episode special - http://www.smoothgroovers.com
We need to campaign for a Guitars Saxes and Soul gig and show the media that this quality of music is timeless and still has great appeal.
Top top jock..what a great voice, got a few sound of sunday tapes left, used to listen to his saturday show at route 66 records in south ockendon, then when the record promoter came round in his van around 3pm would buy as much as poss of what Robbie had played to take out on our saturday night gigs..if Robbie had played it & we had it,we were hot!! Come back mate we miss u loads..
Thanks for the uploads SteveB and Steve St James. Listened to the first 30 minutes of the Jaazz FM Robbie Vincent Winners Show and it’s a total corker. Thanks heaps for that. More full show shares would be glorious!
Come back soon Robbie, you are greatly missed.
Lets get this great man out of retirement.
I miss the excellent tracks that he played on the saturday morning show. The tallentless tunes we now have to put up with just do not inspire us.
I can still remember the first time RV played Dave Grusin and I went out straight away and purchased the Jap LP, ( I now also have on CD)
One track that will always remind me of the great man is NEW YORK, NEW YORK, NEW YORK by the Starship Orchestra, man what a track.
I still visit Soul Bros Records to see what old and new tracks are available, but I have drifted away from Jazz Funk a bit as the good music has gone, so I am into Latin Salsa Music, and the clubs are like the old Caister soul weekenders.
Lets get Robbie out of Retirement
Barry
I’ve uploaded four full Robbie Vincent shows. Two JazzFM and two Radio1.
Enjoy.
Chris
Nice one Chris, I hope to have a few Radio London Robbie shows within the next couple of weeks, just trying to make time to do it.
regards
Steve St James
thanks Chris, these are great and they are Sunday shows, what I was looking for!
Chris,
You’ve made my year.
Hearing Robbie in full flow after all this time blows me away.
Are there any clubs that still play this stuff?
Keep those shows coming
Glenn
Two more full shows for your enjoyment:
102.2 Jazz-Fm Robbie Vincent Breakfast Show
and Robbie Vincent Radio1 Sound of Sunday Night pt.1 and 2 followed by Ranking Miss P
Hi Chris, thanks very much mate looking for ward to hearing them, the radio 1 sound of sunday night seems to not want to download, the others are ok?
regards
Steve St James
Chris,
Many thanks. Got them downloaded OK. Hey Steve St James…how’s it going? Looks like it’s just you, me and Chris keeping the board going!
Kevin Twelvetrees and Jude John Lobo have content which would be good to hear. Guys, have you had a chance to start converting tapes yet? Long laborious process, I know, but it would be great to hear some of what you have.
Be also good to hear your Robbie Vincent Radio London shows, Steve St James.
By the way, thanks for the skydrive material SteveSt. and SteveB.
Chris
Hi Chris & SteveB,
I’m hoping to grab some time this weekend to record at least one of the Robbie sessions from Radio London. It’s a shame there hasn’t been a higher response from others who monitor this board with material, but hey ho! I guess it’s up to us eh!
Don’t want to get your hopes up but I have found several tapes with Robbie written on them, won’t know for sure till I play them.
regards
Steve St James
Steve,
Great news any little bit helps. Gets fans remembering the “good old days” and I believe we are keeping the recordings alive for even the new generation to listen to.
Looking forward to hearing any material you might have.
Cheers
SteveB
I’ve only just fouund this site. It’s brilliant!
Can I add my voice to the call to get The Great Robbie Vincent back on NATIONAL network radio. The British people must be deprived of his personality and music choice no longer!
I hate to be negative, but I look at the slot on BBC Radio 2 on a Saturday night from 9:00 pm and think ….sheeshh! Makes me remember back to those magnificent shows that Robbie did for Radio 1 in the 80’s. And his breakfast shows on Capital (?) in 1999/00 when I lived in London.
Looking back to what Paul@Radiocafe wrote in Dec., you are spot-on about the radio stations. Another soul-playing fine personality, Peter Young has, in just the last 2 weeks, been treated disgracefully by Smooth Radio. What on Earth is wrong with them?
Imagine a station with both Robbie and Peter on it - pure Heaven.
Hi Guys,
I’m just uploading the first of many Robbie Shows as I’m writing this, one or two are slightly ropey as they have been in the loft for years, bear with them as the music is pure quality.
The first one is a recording of Robbie on radio London on a Saturday, I have a few more of those to upload too.
I’ll post here once I have uploaded more, these take a while to do as you can appreciate.
regards
Steve St James
That’s more like it. That’s more like it. Thanks, Steve
No probs Chris, they’ll be 3 in total in the next 20 mins.
Steve
Robbie Vincent actually made me into the vinyl addict I am today I was stationed in Germany and with the help of 2 other djs brought Robbie to the masses Jazzfunk was huge by the time we left in 1985.
I would love to listen to any back cataloques of the shows. FUNK IT!!
p.s great site
Thanks for taking the time to trawl through the tapes in the loft and upload, Steve St James. Really enjoying listening to those old Robbie Vincent shows. Gold dust!

HiGuys,
I found the link here on my facebook page “Robbie Vincent Appreciation Society” and have read all the posts with great Interest….Also took the liberty of downloading most of the tracks that I dont have, many thanks to the 2 Steves for you hard work, And I hope you dont mind if I post some on my Facebook page ? so that others can listen and share
I have been a RV fan since he first started out on Radio London and spent many a saturday afternoon listening to his shows then flying round the shops to buy what we had heard, (sadly my vinyl all went) then listen to Soul Spectrum on Capital before we went out for the night, ie: The Royalty Southgate : The Rio at Didcot : Cali Ballroom at Dunstabe etc etc….Although it was handy walking into a club with the great mans record box under your arm saying “I’m with him” Free entry every time
Anyways before all that started he used to play on a saturday night at the Golden Lion pub in Sydenham (just round the corner from his house) but stopped as he was very worried about the rough element that got in there and he moved onto bigger and better things…….The rest is history!!!!!!!!
http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=9723895218
I will upload some tunes very soon and some might be duplicated where I might have them on a higher bitrate for better quality….also I had a problem downloading the shows from the smoothgroove website please help!!!!

Robbie’s show on Sat lunchtime on BBC Radio London and the Radio One “Long Hot Soulful Summer of (’76 ‘77) were fantastic! PLEASE come back! We need some jocks who can play real soul music. Where can we hear a “Jazz-Funk half hour” these days? Need I say more?
Richard
RE John’s posting (173).
Thanks for lettin us know bout “Robbie Vincent Appreciation Society” on facebook.
I started listening to Robbie on radio London back in 77.
With the problem downloading the shows from the smoothgroove website,
if you mean www.smoothgroovers.com, right click ‘download’ and click save target as or save link as. Only the last few shows are downloadable from there.
Itunes allow you to get their shows for free and so does podcast sites like podfeed.net - use the right click method.
Harris
Just thought I’d search online to see what had happened to my fav talkshow host on radio & have to say there were a few times there were technical hitches on his show & he had to play music & I loved it. Please bring Robbie back!
I wonder if anyone has any of his talk show stuff?
I don’t think he will be coming back will he
I started gettin into Jazz Funk And Soul through Robbie’s Radio One Shows preparing to go out on Saturday nights in 1977 that “Long Hot Soulful Summer”. Classic! I still have around 20 Tapes that seem to last forever from ‘77 to around 1985. Great shows with occasional guesting by Jeff Young who I also liked to hear and Chris Hill and Chris Brown dropping in now and again. We used to go to clubs like Flicks in Dartford and the one in Leysdown on the Isle of Sheppey (what was it called?) to see Robbie. Also regularly up at the Lyceum to see Greg Edwards. Robbie was the very best Genius DJ who made my life a whole lot sweeter. In recent years I started reliving the old Robbie days through Gordon Mac’s great Saturday shows on Kiss FM….travesty they got rid of him. Nothing last forever but through the medium of tape those great shows live on and on! Thank God for BASF and TDK!
For those, like me, who remember the Radio London show from the early 80s this (click on my name for the Youtube link) track is just one of so many that epitomises that amazing time. Enjoy :o)
Robbie Vincent….this man’s got class…..
He play Funk….Dig it
Does anyone remember when the phone lines went down on Radio London during one weekday phone-in… and to fill in Robbie asked an assistant to “bring in my record box from next door” There followed one good unscheduled music show on a phone-in slot!!
Yep, saw the man at Flicks in Dartford, and the BARN IN BRAINTREE. Anyone else go there?
And, way way back on the Saturday Show, does anyone remember the feature “Robbies’ Rocket Records”? I believe he then played Staus Quo, Caroline. This was obviously before the more well known soul show flavour……..
Budgie - it was Stage 3 in Leysdown on the Isle of Sheppey!

Paul
Keith Paul thank you both so much I feel strangely complete again sure wish we could have those days again
This site get’s my vote…..An inspirational Broadcasting legend. An icon who is surely missed.I personally use to listen to Robbie when he broadcasted his Saturday lunchtime show. I was fifteen and Started collecting vinyl.I was part of a dance troop called ‘Unknown Quantity’ from Ilford/Barking in Essex. The Jazz Funk Scene was still predominately underground at the time with clubs like Crackers in Wardour St,The Wag in Oxford St,100 Club,Ronnie Scott’s,Jaffa’s,Global Village in Charing Cross to name a few.Local clubs being Lacy Lady and the legendary Ilford Town Hall with Froggy. We were minor personalities at the time…Living it up. My Personal Favorite tracks of the time being:
‘Endless Flight’-Rodney Franklin
‘Hunt Up Wind’ -Sadao Watanabe
‘Grand Prix’ - Fuse One
‘Change’ -Donald Byrd
‘Fusion Juice’ - Jeff Lorber
‘Free as the wind’ - The Crusaders
‘Twinkle’ - Earl Klugh…..The list is just endless.
Thanks to Robbie I have a collection and knowledge of Jazz,Soul, funk and now House that is the envy of all I know.I formed an Underground Pirate Station ‘Elite FM’ WITH 14 dj’s all with residencies throughout London and the South East.I would do a 4 hour set live playing all the Rare Groove Classics on Friday nights and a Jazz Funk Session on the Saturday early evening…This went brilliantly for 10 Months until I got busted…Not once but 3 times…My love of music has certainly cost me a small fortune in more ways that one.
There has never been anyone remotely close to Robbie , I’d love him to return, there is a market out there for Quality and Robbie Vincent is most certainly that. I’ll be watching this space.
Hi Kenny
Hunt Up Wind was Hiroshi Fukumura, and not Watanabe

I have many fond memories of listening to Robbie’s shows on Radio London during the early 80’s. Both of his phone -in and soul shows are legend. There has never been anyone to touch him since. I loved his sarcastic handovers with Tony Blackburn who had his own soul show whuich went out just before Robbie’s phone-in.
Time has moved on but there is still a place for Robbie and the timeless soul music he played. Smooth Radio? Radio Two? back on BBC London? All could accommodate him.
I wish him well wherever he is and lets just hope he gets to see all these messages!! and maybe has a change of heart to broardcast on a more regular basis.
I remember going out to buy a vinyl copy of Dave Grusin’s album which had on it the theme for his phone-in ….I still have it and from time to time play it just to get that memory back of lunchtimes with Robbie. is that sad?
and these..
54 Sealevel (great instrumental)
Dominoes Donald Byrd
I can remember Robbie playing Boogie oogie oogie by Taste of Honey on the Saturday Show about a year before it broke into the charts
Anybody still got a “Keep fit, Boogie with Robbie Vincent” T shirt??
Praful/Karl….Yeah Chaps quality listings from you both. I was’nt to heavily into the P-Funk Thang myself, on the vocal tip my taste was more Soulful from funky to laid back grooves to cruise along to on a lazy summer’s afternoon in the AMG

Headline News - William Bell

Hi,
The last i heard of Robbie was playing superb Jazz and Soul on what was then Jazz F.M.
Obviously Robbie was informed of the changes to be made to the station and probably the music that he was going to be expected to be playing.
Robbie was one of the first out of there as there was no way he was going to be playing the likes of Rod Stewart and Elvis!!
The once great Jazz F.M., now Smooth F.M., plays exactly the same music as all the other mainstream radio stations and i no longer tune in.
Please Mr Vincent find a worthy station and grace us once again with your mix of humour, honesty and divine tunes, Mark Lee
I was a listener end of the seventies and beginning of the eigthies here in Holland.
The reception here in Delft [ place between The Hague and Rotterdam ] was
reasonable on 206 metres medium wave.
Thanks to Steve ST James and SteveB for the MP3’s and recordings.

Amazing how no one has a bad word to say for Robbie Vincent and to be fair his on air shows were right on the button, however ‘off air’ RV a former hard news print journalist secretly resented being parted from the news gathering operation and demanded to sit and compiled his entertainment shows/playlists in the newsroom at the 1970’s BBC Radio London, even to the extent of sweeping into the nearest waste bin current news source materials, tape recorders and so on if anyone dared sit at ‘his’ desk at anytime during the 24 hour day. His demands on management and a complete disregard for needletime quotas, put a few backs up, this eventually leading to him moving stations and networks. The late Adrian Love and RV had a standup difference of opinion, Love then blocked several open doors for RV.
I also miss Robbie’s shows and always listened and recorded his Saturday shows on Radio London. Caister was always a highlight (I still have my whistle and roller skates somewhere) with Robbie, Chris Hill, Froggy RIP and also regular Robbie stand in Jeff Young. Coming back to Essex down the A12 was always an adventure meeting up with other Soul patrols. How I miss my Bass Bins Throbbing to Robbie’s excellent taste of music. Solar Radio seem to be the only people still with a love of this music and I applaud the work and effort it must take to stay on air. Robbie has left me with many memories for which I thank him and till the day I die, if it moves I will funk it.
Hello,
I remenber Robbie Vincent from his early shows on Radio 1 and further shows for other stations. All of his shows were professionally presented and the sooner he returns to brodcasting the better. Indeed, someone at the BBC should do themselves a favour and beg this man to return and grace the listening public with his unmatched brand of broadcasting. It would be a breath of fresh air compaired with the garbage that is served up on Radio 1 these days.
Pete Flavell
The word legend doesn’t even come close to describing Robbie Vincent. I miss his shows more than I could ever have imagined when he was on air during the 70s, 80s and 90s. It’s not just his exquisite taste in music, but it’s his style of delivery. Just perfect. He loved the music, he knew the music and he introduced me to the type of music that I’d never have come across before. That’s the real job of a DJ - tell that to the robots that run most of the stations on the air these days - Solar being the honourable exception. In fact, if he were ever to come back to the airwaves - and please Robbie, do just that - Solar would be a perfect home. Robbie - we miss you!

Yes, definately bring back Robbie on Radio, goodness knows FM Radio is lacking sooo much professionalism these days. Robbie certainly influenced my DJ career (along with Froggy of course). I remember two tunes that he played which really blew me away 1. Fatback Band - Keep on stepping and 2. Heatwave - Aint no half stepping. These were Robbie discovered tracks through and through. Keep up the good work Radiocafe.
Kind Regards
Eddy James (Starpoint Radio - Monday nights 9-11pm on www.starpointradio.com)
Great idea, I remember most of the biography given above and liked his musical taste and playlists and have bought much of the stuff I first heard him play. I thought I heard him today on Solar radio - he’s not listed on its site, but your biog suggests that it probably was him. Go on pursuade him
The standard of Radio programming and music selection is probably the worst it has ever been, period, with many dull and personality lacking presenters,[all bar one or two individuals] most of which are playing the most awfull selection of music. Tune in to any local station to hear the same tune played over and over endlessly. Its the most inventive and interesting media format yet we are subjected to mind numbing radio programmes that show none of this.
RV started [I am led to believe] on the Pirate Radio Station, Radio NorthSea International back in the early 70s thats when I first heard him. His time with BBC Radio London, to me was the best, and was one of the funkiest places to hear not only the latest but also the hipest soul grooves being played on our dancefloors.
When I was DJ’ing with Shaun French I was reintroduced to RV and have listened to his excellant tunes and witty comments, you can tell straight away that he loves his music. I met both RV and Bob James a few years back at the Barbican and both had time to talk to their many worshipers. I thinks its time to get this guy back into the hot seat, throw away the programme list and let him entertain us yet again. In the words of Billy Paul ‘Bring the family back’ CS
good news Robbie is back on October 12th Jazz fm 10am to 1pm every sunday. You can catch him on digital, sky and the web.

Bloody Norah! Fantastic news. Unbelievable! Great to know the campaign was a success and I hope Robbie gets a chance to read some of the nice things people have said throughout the campaign on this thread.
Welcome back, Robbie. Can’t wait for you to grace the airwaves again with your sublime tracks and knowledge of music. I really, really hope JazzFM give Robbie the platform and freedom to select and play his choones, and not restrict him in any way.
Steve/John, thanks for the news.
Chris
I am glad Robbie is back on the airwaves finally, but surprised from the same station which made him quit in the first place. I was told he left due to health problems. But as long as he is back on the air who cares
If we all shout the same our voices will be heard
Can’t wait to see what he is going to play, the master in action
Brilliant

http://www.soulwalking.co.uk/News.html
Hi,
This link confirms the great news of the man’s return. Will be a real treat to hear him on the airwaves again.
Peace and music everybody.
@ Praful
I’ll assume you’ve got a Windows PC.
If you’ve got a freeview tuner (PVR) in or attached to your pc you should, like me, be able to pick up the Jazz FM station via this device. The supplied software will enable you to record programs. Alternatively you can simply tune in via the web site and record the audio stream using an audio capture package. e.g. Totalrecorder. There are probably other options but there’s a couple to consider.
HTH,
Keith
Check www.listenincolour.com for Jazz FM’s new website before they are launched on Monday 6th October. Peter Young is also down as a presenter.
Anyone know if this campaign actually helped?!
Richard
So Glad to see I’m not the only one REALLY MISSING Robbie Vincent, Greg Edwards and all the REAL EMPRESARRIOS of Funk, soul and Jazz from Jazz FM.
Yesterday I watched on Sky BET TV, The Profile of Diva CHAKA KHAN!! It sooo reminided me of the my teen years and young adulthood listening to Robbie play her classic tracks and me always wishing to be able to sing like Chaka……. Not forgetting those vibrant and enchanting sounds of Jonny Guitar Watson, The Blackbyrds, aaahhhh tunes……
Then I remembered the brilliant. ..I think it was called ” Guitars and Strings” concert I took my daughter and a friend to see, at Hammersmith and the last Bob James concert at the Barbican Hall…all smoothly and professionally hosted by Robbie Vincent.
There is truly no justice in the world when we ditch good talent like this and bring in rubbish like ‘Big Brother etc…
BRING BACK ROBBIE AND GREG EDWARDS !!! LET THE FUNK BACK IN AND JAZZ REIGN SUPREME!!! CHAKA KHAN. CHAKA CHAN!
Hey fellow ‘Robbie-Vincent ites’,
My eyes arent what they used to be … and I missed the great news that Robbie IS actually back! Well done all… sorry I was a bit late to the party …… but brilliant!
Cant wait to tune in and update my kids (the next generation of Jazz Funk heads).
Thanks
Seas.
I am confused. Jazz FM changed it’s name to Smooth FM. But Now Jazz FM is re-launching on 6th October.
Am I missing something/have I got it wrong?
Unless I’m completely blind…I went onto the Jazz FM website and saw no mention of Robbie Vincent on the new look presenter’s list. It mention’s Pete Young……Is it me?
Anyway played a three hour set last night on Elite FM 97.9…..Storming.

Yea, bring back Robbie
I loved his Music for a Candelit Dinner slot on Sunday night
Here was a DJ who actually LIKED music. No wonder he’s not on!
Bring back the V man.
Bring back Robbie
Have heard on the “Soul Grapevine” that Robbie’s returning to JazzFM mid October 08, Sunday slot around lunch or mid morning.
It will be a return of someone special who as indicated on so many occaisions is almost solely responsible for the soul movement late 70’s early 80’s with his injection of music and involvement in bringing real music to the majority, which a minority had for so long not been aware of. Truely a man with distinction and a great sense of humour.
Love and peace Sir.
ITS TRUE..jazz fm is being re-launched on dabs and internet on october and robbie is on on sunday mornings, not only that but late lounge is back as well, with claire anderson, iand sara ward on dinner jazz,n fact all the proper jazz fm programes…its a proper jazz station again, look at listenincolour.com for all the info and schedules…hurrah,at last..love it,love it!
Best news ive heard in a very long time
Check out soulwalking.com they have a link to Robbie where you get a biography also a link to the Peter Young Playlist on Solar which is brilliant. Hopefully PY will be still doing his Solar Show.
I was just thinking?????…..If it wasn’t for Robbie, Radio One wouldn’t have played black dance music or have had Jeff Young, if it wasn’t for Jeff Young they wouldnt have played Rap and dance music and wouldnt have had Pete Tong (superstar DJ)…Hey !!!!does that mean Robbie was the inspiration for the dance music Phenomonon…I think that it does…..hard industrial techno ….Its Robbie’s fault….
Long reign Robbie….Im gonna have to dig out my old compilation tapes and try and transfer them to CD….good i can hear it now….’if it moves….. funk it’….
the link below is a trailer for the Robbie Vincent show on Radio One

I loved listening to Robbie Vincent on a saturday morning. I would love to hear him back on the radio, in the meantime. Does anyone know if there is a cd I can buy with the tracks from his show. Great music.
Hi Lisa,
if you backtrack on the posts, you’ll see some rather exciting news about the man making a return very soon to JazzFM.
In answer to your last question, I was only listening yesterday to some vinyl, Classic Jazz-Funk 5 from the Mastercuts productions. Which as a matter of interest is a selection of Robbie’s personal tastes from that time, back in the day.
You possibley can find it on CD now, but may take a little effort in tracking down. But it is out there.
Happy Days.
Great news about Robbie!

As Peter Ralph suggested, you might want to consider checking the MasterCuts series for other fine tracks Robbie played on his shows. Also look out for a title entitled: Breezin’: the Very Best of Smooth Jazz As Heard on Jazz FM.
Not long to go until Robbie graces the airwaves again. That clock is counting down…I can’t wait.
Great news that Robbie is coming back. Have downloaded MP3s from Steve St James but the SteveB link says the file is missing or moved. Can SteveB or anyone else help?
Hi,
I miss Robbie V. Used to love this man’s show. He was an honest DJ that loved music and didn’t compromise for the sponsors.
I have now relocated to Ireland where I DJ and still talk about Robbie to my friends here.
Come Back Robbie!
Hi All,
Thought I’d upload some more tunes for you till Robbie gets back on the airwaves on the 8th…..enjoy, I guess the trail has gone cold for anyone else to upload some old Robbie radio?
The new tunes are in the October tunes folder 17 of them.

Steve St James enjoying all your tunes. I think I have some old Robbie tapes in the loft, will try and dig them out this weekend. What is the best way to download them? Do you use any specific software? Also I still can’t find SteveB’s downloads, the file is missing is the error message. Any ideas.
Will definitely be tuned in on Sunday morning. Is there a way of saving the new shows, I don’t want to rely on my old C90s any more!
Hi Graeme,
I have started to add the files back to the share! hope you enjoy.
Steve
Hi Graeme,
I connect my tape drive to my pc and record them via the free software program called “Audacity”, it can be found most places by typing it into google.
As for recording Robbie on the weekend I will be recording it from my DAB radio and will put them up on my space for download. Alternatively I think you will be able to record directly to your pc via Audacity and Jazz FM website.
If you wanted to send me the Robbie tapes I’d be happy to record and return them to you.
Steve
SteveB
I will look forward to downloading these files when they are up on the site
Steve St James
Thanks for the offer I will try and dig them out this weekend. I have also got some Caister Radio tapes from the mid 80s. One particular tape is “Live From The Front Room”. This is Robbie and Chris Hill DJing from the main venue on a Saturday Night, what memories, I can almost taste the snake bite
Listening to Jazz FM - I have heard HIS voice - Thank goodness for that it is true HE will be returning!!!
I’ve been trying to listen to Jazzfm on-line from Denmark over the past 2 days, can I listen in,” no way”.
Am so hacked off that I won’t be able to listen to Robbie on Sunday and thereafter.
There’s no justice in this world. Lol.
Robbie, I remember your talk shows back in the day and thanks to you I have been hooked ever since.
I am a massive music buff and love listening to ole and nu school when i’m out or with friends. When i’m on my lonesome, I love listening to talk!!

Come back Robbie, your country needs you!!

What a legend in the music world. Soul and jazz funk Robbie was the main man, and his ‘if it moves funk it’ phrase was a classic of all time. Along with Chris Hill, Robbie was a legend in the world of soul and funk music. It would be so good to hear his voice and choice of tunes back on the radio again !
Can’t wait to hear Robbie on Sunday. Managed to Catch and enjoy Jazz FM on the internet last night (Friday) - great tunes! but it was a struggle to get it working - it stopped after about an hour and now can’t get it working at all.
The Player says, playing or waiting - no sound. Disk space is good, Same problem on Mozilla3 and ie6, using P3 1GHz 384MB memory & windows 2000. All my other favourite stations, both here and in the states work fine.
Any Ideas - don’t want to miss Robbie tomorrow. Not Got DAB or Sat services.
ROBBIE VINCENT is back 12 October 10-12AM
We have been waiting since 2002 - 6 long years.
Pity its on DAB as unable to record even on PC.
TIP: Close down Smooth fm an replace with JAZZFM on TERRESTIAL RADIO

So, here’s to the next installment.
Out in Kuala Lumpur and was just about to head out to a conference registraion when I remembered 17.00 lcal= 10am UK and what a joy to get the first 20mins of Robbie back on air-a dream come true…as good as ever. Sahemcouldnt listen to entire show and I dont think I’ll get to hear next weeks…but it was a treat so far from the UK…look forward to more on my return…many thanks!
You can record the show by downloading Freecorder for free - it will then record any station you are playing on your pc - used it today, worked fine, great to have Robbie back on the ‘waves.
Great shout for a great man
I used to be resident DJ at the Lazy Toad in Beckenham back in the early nineties and he used to come in with his daughter Natalie,he was so encouraging I used to be totally in awe when I knew he was in the club.
He & others like Greg Edwards & Chris Hill have shaped my musical pathway for decades,I too loved his saturday afternoon show he played stuff you could only get on import which was sometimes frustrating because they were rare & hard to find and would take ages for record companies to put them out on general release.
He was resident DJ at Flicks in Dartford on friday nights in the early eighties which was brilliant, I still can see him now in the dj booth like it was yesterday.
Here are a few of my favorite tracks that I remember I first heard that he played.
Feel the real David Bendeth
Running away Roy Ayers
Dancin & Prancin Candido
Run Away Love Linda Clifford
one good turn mark colby
Space princess lonnie Liston Smith
Funk reaction Lonnie Smith
Southern freeze Freeze
Dance with me Peter Brown
It aint Reagae instant funk
I moved to America in 2000 but just before I left I think he was playing on jazz fm on sunday afternoon and that was a good show.
If anybody knows if he is playing on a radio show please let me know I can always listen via streaming.
This a great idea and hope you succeed getting on the air and back doing what does best making people happy
Good Luck
Loozegear
Loozegear, you should read the previous posts! Robbie is on Jazz FM on the internet www.jazzfm.com Sundays 10am to 1pm - first show this last weekend (12th October).
Hey Richard thank you so much, I didnt have time to look at all the post I just stumbled upon this site by accident! I cant wait all the best.
Well done to everyone for your support of the Campaign to bring back Robbie Vincent - isn’t it good to have him back?
The incredible Ralph Tee is also back on air, along with many other fantastic broadcasters, includling legend Peter Young. It’s like someone time warped our radios back a decade.
Congratulations to everyone at the all new Jazz FM, Expansions Records, and everyone here for your continued dedication to the good music cause. We’ll revise the Radiocafe pages on Robbie Vincent (www.radiocafe.co.uk/robbie-vincent) soon to reflect the fact that he is now back on air proving that it if moves, he funks it.
All the best,
Radiocafe
The man who introduced MAZE to the UK - he should be Knighted !
I cannot play Dayton’s “The Sound of Music” without thinking of Robbie Vincent - brings back memories of saturdays.
Remember his protegee Steve Walsh - just how big was he gonna be !!
Help needed! On Robbie’s first show back on Jazz FM, he played a track that he didn’t name check.
It was played 3rd or 4th to last, near 1pm, just before Sly and the Family Stone’s ‘Everyday People’ - it was a latin/samba/jazz type track.
Anybody know what I’m talking about?!
Richard
Hi Richard,
I think you’ll find a live version of the track here…
http://worldtv.com/smoothgrooverstv/
At the time of writing this , its the first song on this stations video presentation.
Give it a minute before this live version becomes recognisable as the track I think you mean.
It Is ”Toda Menina Baiana” by Gilberto Gil
I first heard it on one of Robbie’s Shows many years ago, probably BBC Radio London
-H
Hi Richard,
I know what you’re talking about…it’s the track where the chorus goes something like “Ah ha ha ha free yourself”. It’s by Gilberto Gil and the track ID is “Toda Menina Baiana”. Here’s a link to a live performance by the great man, http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=mgx8hGy_aPk
Really enjoying these shows and totally loved the track Robbie played titled “Going Out Tonight” by Cool Million. Absolutely glorious!
Richard I think the track you mean is Gilberto Gil”Toda Menina Balana” from 1979. Sadly I missed his second show as I was away on a stag do.Its a pity there is no listen again service with Jazz fm.
Thanks, that’s exactly the track I was after, much appreciated.
I agree, a listen again service would be a real bonus, or even a Robbie podcast of some or all of the show, what with technology these days.
Just a thought for any members with Sky+
You can record the Jazz FM shows on channel 202 using manual recording - press the record button when you are on the channel.
This can be set up up to a week before the show and set to repeat every week to make sure you don’t miss any shows.
If you have a cd recorder you could (i think) back up the recording onto cd although I haven’t tried this
Hope this helps a few people - apologies for not uploading any tracks I couldn’t get a decent quality recording from vinyl to upload, still trying on that one
David C
Hi I have just found you site and delighted to see that there is a campaign to bring back Robbie Vincent, he gave so much pleasure listening to his JFM morning shows and going to concerts he helped organise including a show in London with performances by Peter White Steve Cole and Brain Culbertson. Robbie also reacquainted me with Swing Out Sister playing their then new album Somewhere Deep in the Night.
Now that I have read the comments from fellow campaigners I feel that I have found a lost friend who one day went out for a walk and did not return
The man was, is, and always will be an absolute star. Still have my recorded cassettes of “the sound of Sunday night” on radio one, Real to Real - “Love Me Like This”, Michael Wycroft - “Do You Really Love Me”, and Al Hudson - “Spread Love” almongst other great tracks. Looked forward to “music for a candlelit dinner”, but not before Norman Tebbit had been on the phone to issue a government meltability warning! Always enjoyed the periodic all-winners shows, and of course the last two programmes of the year - kiiler cuts of the year.
No let up either when he moved to “the sound of Saturday night”, eg. Fatback band - “Rythym of the night”, Doc Powell - “Give It Up”, and the first play I heard of the I think superior 12″ version of Will Downing - “A Love Supreme”.
Went to see him during the Kiss FM days at a pub in Watford, when he asked the crowd if they had ever bought a Bobby Womack record. No response. The(youngish) audience obviously not up to his standard. And he carried his own records(vinyl) out at the end.
What can I say?! Robbie Vincent back on the radio with the re-launch of Jazz FM. The highlight of my radio dial for quite a few years! I first caught his shows on newly legal Kiss - I was mostly listening to house and hip-hop at the time, however, his shows were my education into soul and jazz-funk.
Please, Please, Please Robbie Vincent come back.
In fact I am going to a place called Freddy’s in harrow which every first Saturday of the month they have a Soul Glo night. Choice FM DJ plays some brilliant tunes that takes me back to the 80’s. Tomorrow night (1st November 2008) Greg Edwards will be making an appearance, which will bring the roof down.
Not saying I dont like the tunes that are out now, but 80’s soul and jazz funk makes me want to dance. Do all those moves I done back then.
Er, have some people not been reading the thread properly??? Robbie Vincent is BACK!
Robbie must be put back on the Airwaves again. When I think of all the musical styles and genres that have come and gone over the last 30 years or so the only stuff that still sounds fresh and exciting is the Jazz Funk and Soul from the 70s, 80s and early 90s but escpecially the eighties sound that Robbie educated me with on Radio London. My good friend DJJazzyPat and myself still Play and remix these tunes today and never get fed up with listening to this genre. Songs such as Phyllis Hyman “You know how to love me”. Chuck Jackson “All over the World”. Atlantic Starr “Circles”. Deodato “Keep on moving”. Candido “Dancing and Prancing”. Roy Ayers “Running away”. The love Unlimited Orchestra “lift your voice and say” and a thousand others from that era are “Gems” that never fade with time. the only band I can honestly say sounds as good today are the Sunburst Band.
Fantastic to hear the ‘ great one ‘ is back, can’t wait for the next show on sunday, “Robbie we love you”.
In response to DJTel , Surely Incognito are also worthy of a mention, though I agree with you that the The Sunburst Band are amazing.
For those that missed Robbie’s show I have uploaded it and removed the adverts etc….enjoy
Steve St James
Thanks so much Steve St James and others for all your efforts. I’ve been following this excellent thread for a while and just want to let you all know that all your valuable contributions are very much appreciated.
I remember the days when it was just 1 hr of cool tunes on Capital Radio on friday night with Greg Edwards, how things have changed.
I’ve been searching the net for all the old tracks i could find and everytime i heard one it just reminded me of laying in bed on a saturday morning after a friday night out at the royalty in southgate with the radio tuned to Radio London and Robbie plying the airwaves with the best music in the world.
Aunty Mabel dancing to “You’ve got the floor” with mop in hand. lol
All the crews in and around London dedicating tracks to one and all.
The alldayers the weekenders the allnighters god those were such great times.

Thanks Nazboy, your comments are much appreciated!
I do find it odd that people are still writing comments about getting Robbie back on the air when most of us know he is.
For those that don’t read posts that are older than 1 hour, he is on Jazz FM on Sundays 10am till 1pm.
Steve St James
Steve,
Exellent Downloads Mate….I have quite a huge collection from back in the day. How do I convert them from Vinyl to the same format that you have put them out? As I would like to spread the wealth, please excuse my ignorance. I mix them onto cd format but that’s as far as my technical know-how stretches…BPM’s Samplers and 1200’s are the heights of my powers.
Regards
Kenny Johnson
Hi Kenny,
I had to use a minidisk to transfer from a normal audio system, but there are a couple of more elegant ways.
http://www.vinyl-2-pc.co.uk/
or
http://www.whybuynew.co.uk/
Option 1 being the cheapest, Let me know how you get it’s always nice when someone else contributes mp3’s etc.
Steve St James
Kenny
see next thread below
Kenny
If your stuff is on cd Kenny load them on to a pc using real player / windows media player in MP3 FORMAT
Format converters are free on the net if you have trouble these should convert most file formats m8.
http://nchsoftware.com
Then load the tracks as mp3 formats on to a file sharing site or you tube and paste the link into your next thread.
you could try these sites as well

Hope this helps m8

Steve S, I have some tunes which Robbie used to play on his show that I’d like to contribute to the cause. Any chance I could upload them to your skydrive?
Hi Nazboy,
I would need to provide you with my hotmail user name and password so you understand that I can’t do that, much as I’d like to see your tunes.
If you open a hotmail email account you will automatically be allocated a skydrive to upload your mp3’s to.
Let me know how you get on, if I can help in any other way I will.
Steve St James
Just another little snippet from yesteryear
Look out for Aunty Mabel

If you have any old photos of clubs ie Lacy Lady - Crackers - Frenchies - Oscars - The Cali - Flicks - Gold Mine - Royalty or any other please email to me in jpeg format so i can add them to a great track.

Hello,
I listened to Robbie Vincent’s Nightline as a kid, as I always liked having the radio on at night (and still do). Can anyone help me with the name of the music used on the Nightline jingle? Sometimes, Robbie would play a good minute or so on his show and I would love to hear it again, in full, because it’s been fifteen years at least!
If only they had invented Shazam back then, kids have it easy today!
Jamie
Hi Jamie, there was a jingle which sampled the Manhattan Transfer track ” Tuxedo junction”. Not sure if this is it so check it out at itunes.

Hi Andy, thanks for the reply, unfortunately it wasn’t that song, but there is a little snippet of it on this http://johnallen.com/audio/player.php?clip=newstalk/nightlinepromo It’s very brief, but it’s all I’ve managed to find of it so far…
Hey folks, finally got around to setting up my Skydrive. I’ve been using some old tracklists from Robbie’s radio shows to compile a list of my favourite cuts from tapes recorded circa 84,85. From the list so far I’ve managed to get twenty odd songs together in mp3 format, some quite rare, all of which are uploaded to the Skydrive. Hope to post more when I get time. Enjoy y’all

Steve
Hey folks, thanks for the response. Al, I can’t seem to access your tunes for some reason?
Does anyone have a copy (or can point me in the right direction) of today’s show or at lease the first hour? I missed it.
Thanks in advance.

Hi Chris

Hi all, like most of you I had been waiting for RV to return and I haven’t been disappointed yet!
During the last two weeks RV has played Arthur Miles, Helping Hand last week and this week Tripping On Your Love this Sunday 16th November.
Since then I’ve been driven nuts trying to get these two on MP3 format (sorry vinyl junkies). I did find a Hed Kandi CD with one of the tracks, but I don’t want a double CD for just one track.
Any funkateers out there able to help and perhaps post them somewhere……..?
I have enjoyed reading thro’ the various posts and downloading some of the old stuff - keep up the good work.
Thanks
Nick B
Hi Nick B,
I have helping hand but not the other one, if you follow my link you will be able to download it.

Thanks for the Artur Miles download - what a remix - much appreciated.
I’m now only going half crazy! Does anyone have the other Arthur Miles track, Tripping On Your Love?
Regards
Nick B
I’ve got both those tracks on vinyl but haven’t managed to transfer any vinyl to MP3 yet - got my record deck and the Mac in different houses at the moment and most of my vinyl in storage which doesn’t help!
Did try recording through the mic input on her laptop but results were crap - should I get a USB input from the mixer to record better?
Sorry for not being more help

David C
OK thanks, I appreciate your feedback.
Anyone else out there who can help?
All those old tunes I either missed or just plain forgot means that I now have a weekly challenge tracking all the old memories down.
I guess you could call this a hobby - it can be more frustrating than golf!
Nick B
Hi Nick B & others too.
If you have a wants list let me know and also maybe a list of what you have in case I don’t have them. I will export my list from itunes and make it available for upload when I get a second.
Steve St James
Hi JUDE JOHN LOBO,
I did have the very first show somewhere, if I can find it I will let you know. The transfer of your tapes sounds very expensive, if you have a tape deck and a PC or Laptop all you need is the program called “audacity” and you can record stright to your pc.
Or you can now buy tape decks that plug straight into your usb for about £50, try maplin on the web.
If you search in google, the software program is free and very good.
Steve St James
For those interested, I have posted my itunes list of songs from the good ole days of funk/disco.
I will only post requested tracks for people that participate in sharing.
Steve St James
Great list Steve
Are you a train spotter in your spare time m8 lol

Cheers Naz i have more to download when i have time i’ll post it on here when its done.

If you need to convert them into mp3 files Prism converter is a freebie converter you can get on the net and it works, just download the movie from You Tube then convert it to mp3 file.

Thanks for the information. The software converter is fantastic and the sound quality perfect.
I need to see if I can reciprocate and set up up a Windows live area with an iTune style list like Steve St James.
Thanks for your assistance.

Robbie was the catalyst who launched my ‘career’ on the radio, if you can call it that. He invited me to be a guest on his Radio London show early in 1972, and soon afterwards I got my own show Honky Tonk on the same station. Later on, I moved to Capital, and while I was there my record label Oval released 12″ a single by a new band, Direct Drive. The band preferred the long track ‘Time Machine’ but we assured them that no radio DJ would get through an intro of more than a minute. What did we know? Robbie played it, intro and all, many times, and helped launch not only the band but its keyboard player Paul Hardcastle.
So I’ve got two selfish reasons for being grateful to Robbie and for wanting to support any campaign aimed at getting him back where he belongs, on the radio.
And if anybody has an idea of how to put the two of us in touch with each other, please let me know.

Richard
Thanks to AL, my mrs was a big fan of the scene back in the day, just downloaded all 230+ tracks from your skydrive……. my brownie points are at an all time high
again thanks to all on here, best christmas present I coul have got for her
Cheers Rich
I’m adding to it all the time and after Christmas i’ll start a Motown and Philly rare groove file for all those who may have forgotten some great tracks….
Merry Christmas and happy New Year to all….
Please don’t forget to support the artists by buying the albums….
Al…
If anyone has any suggestions for the Motown and Philly file please let me know your favourite tracks and i’ll add them…..
Merry Christmas all
I have also added 2 files of 10 mins each to my Skydrive, Greg Edwards Soul Spectrum from June 1978 and a Robbie Vincent Show from 1981 that I have mamaged to find….
Also I have started a Motown-Philly-Blue Eyed Soul file with some great tracks….
Enjoy
Cheers Al,
I ‘m well impressed with the tunes you’re put on SkyDrive.
Al have you heard Badness by Morrissey Mullen?
Cheers Kenny
I’ve probably got that track somewhere and i’ll load it up on Skydrive Kenny….
I’ve loaded up some Alphonse Mouzon (By All Means)+(I’m Glad You’re Here) - Ronnie Jordan (So What) - David Joseph (You Can’t Hide) - Maceo Parker (Cross The Track) - Oliver Cheatham (Get Down Saturday Night) - Brother Johnson - Teena Marie - Lonnie Liston Smith and Quincy Jones….
When i get time over Christmas i’ll add some Patrice Rushen tracks….
Please feel free to leave a comment in the guest book on my Skydrive….
I have missed out alot of the mid to late 80’s tracks as i personally think that at the time this was a bit bland and electro….
Just to remind people that the music hasn’t pasted away but moved forward in style. I have also started a file for the 90’s onwards to cover some great Acid Jazz - Jazz Funk….
Ronny Jordan has made some great covers of some old tracks and his newer stuff is in a style of George Benson but with a kicking Bass vibe…. One to listen to is (My Favourite Things) and a Very Cooool track is (Mystic Voyage) which features the great Roy Ayers…. Check it out….
And the All Winners file is now nearing the 300 mark….
Merry Christmas And Happy New Year to All
Hi Al,
If no one else says it I will…..thank you mate for all those tracks. I know it takes alot of time and effort to get the tracks uploaded so I really appreciate your efforts!
Keep em coming..
regards
Steve St James
Al,
I’m never pleasantly more amased than I am when one of you guys come with a crackin’ Choon that I have’nt heard for an age.Its just blindin’ to see so many knowledgable true music lovers out there and testiment to just how much quality was about back in the day. I want to take this opportunity to wish you all a really Funky Xmas and an truly eventful and prosperous New Year.
Cheers Steve & Kenny
Much of the stuff I’m putting on skydrive is freeing up much needed space on the computer anyway….
I have uploaded a few peaches from Patrice Rushen including a nearly forgotten track -( Roll With The Punches )-
Which was one of her very few Instrumental tracks which gave her the accolade of one of the best Jazz Keyboard players of the era….
An absolute gem of a track and one of my favs….
I’ve also added Benny Golson - Bob James - Brenda Russell & First Choice….
Please enjoy
Also when you think it was only between roughly 1976 to 1985 (Jazz-Funk Era) these great musicians managed to give us 1 or 2 great tracks every week in those years….
The end of Motown thru to Philly thru to Jazz Funk along with some great Japanese imports and Brit Funk…. What an era….
Once again thank you Mr Vincent for blessing my ears with such great music and by the sound of it JazzFM has listening figures going thru the roof….
One more track that I’ve added….
Sergio Mendes - The Real Thing
A favourite on the Radio London Robbie Vincent Show….
You’ll remember this when you hear it….
More added….:)
Most are Rare Groove tracks and very hard to get hold of these days….
Atlantic Starr - Carrie Lucas - David Morris - Dayton - Gary Byrd - Glenn Adams - Grover Washington Jr - James Duke - Mainline - Mantus - Midnight Express - Oneness of JuJu - Phyllis Hyman - Rhyze - Saturday Night Band - Tamiko Jones - Tasha Thomas - Terri Wells - The Controllers - The Strikers - Underground - Unlimited Touch
Some of these tracks were fore runners of more successful versions by other bands so they sound very familiar….
Carrie Lucas (Dance with you) has been sampled by Dj’s fairly recently (David Morales)….
Dayton (Out Tonight) was later partly used by Shalamar….
Saturday Night Band (Come On Dance) is very familiar to a classic Chic tune??? You Guess lol similar title…
Tamiko Jones (Can’t Live) is very familiar to Do It Anyway Ya Wanna Do It???
The Strikers (Body Music) is familiar but i can’t put my finger on it so any suggestions please????
As for Phyllis Hyman and Terri Wells i just think they are fantastic versions of classic tracks….
And finally but not least is Grover Washington Jr (Let It Flow) I just love this track and I’m sure most of you do too, Just classic Grover doin what he did best….An RV show favourite…
Happy New Year to all real music lovers
P.S with the exception of ( Gary Byrd and the Gawd Blimmey Experience ) before i get emails…. A bit of Chic .. A bit of Shalamar .. A right ole mongrel mix lol…
But it was played by RV on the Radio London Shows so i put it in…. Sorry its the 10min version but >>> Or was it (If It Moves - Funk It) lol …
Thanks to the wonders of technology my previous comment was edited lol…
Should have read >>>>
Now it makes sense…

Hey Al, Your skydrive folders aren’t available at the time of me posting this message. Temporary glitch? I do hope so. Keith
Sorry about that Keith..
All open again..
Cheers for your email Roger, I have replied , many thanks mate.
Also can anyone help me with a track by Rinder & Lewis (Blue Steel) from the album (Warriors) as I only have a sample of it from an old cassette recording,
I remember Robbie played it at the end of his show back in 1977 (I think) and my tape stopped before the end of the show so I only had a snippet….
If anybody can load the full version to a Skydrive folder I’d be very happy….
I have all the other tracks that I wanted by Rinder & Lewis but its just this one track I’m missing….
Also I’d like to hear from anyone who has some good ideas of what should be added to the BritFunk folder????

Al - so good to hear someone mention “Britfunk”. Here are some “must haves” in any BritFunkateer’s collection:
1. Level 42 - Turn It On
2. Freeez - Southern Freeez
3. Heatwave - about a dozen other gems but how about some Posin’ Till Closin’
4. Alton Edwards - I Just Wanna (Spend Some Time With You)
5. Light Of The World - London Town, Time, I Shot The Sherriff & so many more!
6. Beggar & Co - Somebody Help Me Out (the ultimate Brit Funk track of all time?)
7. Incognito - Parisienne Girl
8. Shakatak - Easier Said Than Done/ Living In the UK / Invitations
9. Rah Band - Perfume Garden for some mellow madness. Or how about “Clouds Across the Moon” for the craziest performance on Top of the Pops ever?!
10. 52nd Street - Open Up Your Eyes (what a tune)
11. First Light - Daybreak
12. Central Line - Walking into sunshine
13. Junior Giscombe - Look What You Done To me (fantastic album track) / Too Late / Mamma Used To Say
14. Linx - You’re Lying / Intuition / Rise and Shine (top track, little played in the day!)
15. Hindsight - Small Change (a Robbie classic from 87, we have this on one of his shows, another monster track!)
16. Kenny Lynch - Half the Day’s Gone
There must be 100s more that are essential to a Brit Funk collection, but these are the first ones off the top of my head.
Anyone reckon there is a better Brit tune ever than the Beggar & Co track?
Nice one fellas - keep up the good work!
Langers @ Radiocafe
Cheers Langers
Some great tunes to start with on your list.. But surely Kenny Lynch???? I think someone already asked if i had that one so I loaded it to Skydrive and its still there..
I’ll start a folder with your list in the new year and we’ll see where it goes..
Hopefully we’ll find some lost gems for people to hear..
And yes Heatwave with the master song writer and Cleethorpes (Lincs) greatest export Mr Rod Temperton.. Now who would have thought it, One of the best song writers of the latter part of the 20th century would come from Cleethorpes..
And Mr David Grant of Linx/Lynx being a singing coach on TV’s Strictly Come Dancing On Ice X Factor I’m Not A Celebrity Get Me In Here’s Big Brother or whatever its called..:)
OMG bring back real talent to the airwaves please…
Also any comments on some Philly tracks would be good…

Its great to see that people care about great music…..
Bring back the Rob Maester!!!!!!
Dear Al & Steve,
I am so grateful for the music you are sharing with us. It has really lightened up my life. My home is now full of good vibes. I am even going to Caister in May to really immerse myself. Are you?
I have managed to download quite a bit but would like to know how to move some of the mp3 stuff to my newly acquires walkman. It accepts album tracks but not mp3 up loads. Is there a solution please? You guys seem to have the technical know how!
I was actually home last Sunday so listen to Robbie’s show. He did read out part of my request to him to thank all at Radio Cafe for the campaign to bring him back. I hope he is enjoying it too. I wish his show was available as a pod cast or repeated later in the week. Seems shame to have such a great show on only once.
Carol..
All I can say this music is meant to be heard and its been collecting dust in the archives for far too long..
I’ll be adding more to the files when I get time and I know Steve and Kenny are out there hunting down some rare old tunes to share..
Carol with an MP3 player and you can upload any MP3 file direct from your pc..
SonyWalkman don’t want you loading anything they can’t charge you for lol..

I’ll check some of those tunes out mate..
Also I have sent you and Steve network links to my Skydrive so you’ll be updated everytime I upload anything..
I am still in the process of clearing down my hard drive of all the tunes I have so I can get some much needed hard drive space back..
(20GB left on Skydrive-plenty of space)
I’m hoping the Skydrive will be a library of all the great tunes of the era and new tracks as well for all to listen to and/or discover..
So if anyone would like to contribute to a Museum of JazzFunk let me know..
Perhaps a new generation can get some JazzFunk education and enjoy these great tunes all over again..
More tunes have been added including (Rare Pleasure - Let Me Down Easy) have a listen and let me know who sampled this and made this track famous ??????
a.k.o@hotmail.co.uk
As an end note:
I hope this will encourage people to go out and support these artists either by buying the CDs/Vinyls or by going to Live Gigs..
(this statement is made due to performing rights regulations)..

Correction from comment 390
Reads:- Carrie Lucas (Dance with you) has been sampled by Dj’s fairly recently (David Morales)…
Should Read:- Carrie Lucas (Dance with you) has been sampled by Dj’s fairly recently (Roger Sanchez)…
Sorry about that.. I’m always impressed at the top DJ’s remembering these tracks and using them in new versions…
Hi All,
Some more tracks uploaded and a couple of really hard to find ones on there too.
Steve St James
Thanks for your postings guys, some great tunes added as well.
I’ve had a go at loading some, hope they work. I chose a few soulful tracks that I remember Robbie playing and have taken me a while to track down. None of these I believe are available from iTunes or similar;
Vivienne Mckone - Fly
Bernard Oattes - Grand Design
Lou Rawls - Stop Me From Starting This Feeling
Mondo Kane - New York Afternoon
Hudson Young - untitled (was the hidden bonus cut on the album ‘What If’ - probably called, ‘Hold On It Could Be A While’).
Enjoy listening!
Richard M
Hi Richard,
Thanks for the upload mate, I’m really pleased Bernard Oattes was in there as I’ve been trying to track that one down.
I’ll post some more tunes between PC crashes etc, been plagued with the dreaded blue screen on and off.
Steve St James
Caister -I believe St John’s Ambulance service are there to aid all the SAGA brigade! I’m going with some old friends some have been every year for the past 30 years so have the stamina. We are the old Lacey Lady crowd. Other haunts included Room at the Top (still going) Ilford Palais, Cranbrook, Crackers, 21, Billys, Tottenham Royal, Southgate Royalty, Barracuda, Flicks, Bridge at Canning Town etc etc. All the c-o-o-l wine bars Sade style! Travelling to new places following the DJs like RV and Tom Holland and Steve Walsh was fun. Dress to impress and dance yo’ ass off!
Absolute favoutrite artistes include Lonnie Liston Smith, Ronnie Laws, AWB, Grover Washington Jnr. Most things involving a saxaphone.
I’m also a fan of Jap Jazz such as Sadao Watanabe, Hiroshi Fukumura.
I like new stuff so not just stuck in the 70s/80s. Someone I have heard lately on TOTALLY RADIO is Dev Large. But I can’t get hold of anything by him/them. Any ideas?
CarolBT,
Read post 204 I may know you from back in the day.
Kenny Johnson
To everybody.
I use to hear a wicked tune called “Wide World Of Sports” from about 1980, possibly earlier, any ideas? I’ve looked everywhere
Bloody hell has the telly broke hahaha never seen so many postings in one night…
Well I might have one of the hardest tracks to find cos I don’t know who its by or the title but its a JapFunk from 1979/80 and I can still humm it……… Any clues
No joke its driven me nuts for years I remember the lyrics and the tune but not a clue of anything else about it….
(The lyrics are mostly in Japanese and the only english words are Oh Girl Deja Vu)
Old haunts:
you never know…
Royalty(nearly every week if poss)
Lacy Lady(twice due to transport issues)
Gold Mine(10)
Flicks(5)
Didoz(10)
Frenchies(2-3) (due to transport issues)
Oscars(many times)
Global Village(many times) then on to Crackers for the sunday afternoon shift…
and one above a big pub in south tottenham/hackney area (can’t remember the name of it now???) (a few times)
1st & 2nd Purley All Dayers - 2nd Caister - 1st All nighter picketts lock (was shyte)
Our problem was transport cos in the early days my mate had to use his mum’s Ford Anglia (six of us in it) which either broke down or it boiled over every ten mins
Deja Vu????? have we all met before in a previous life form
I’m sure that Carol nicked my rum’n'coke in Ilford one night lol…
Welcome Richard… We are slightly senile in here now days (I’d swear it was those loud noises all night long when we were young) Some great tunes there mate…
No Joke about that track tho.. it has driven mad over the past 30 yrs…
AL
Just some fond memories of mine…….
My Era was 1975-1982/3 then I settled down got married and all that stuff…
I remember listening to the AFN (american forces network) on my radio if the weather was good and I heard Chocolate City (a parliament track)… I was hooked from then on, out went the David Stardust and Alvin Essex 7in Vinyls and in came Memorex tape…
And I can still remember the very last track that I heard RV play on Radio London Saturday Show… It was Street Dance (break dance track) and with that I thought Nah not for me I don’t do cardboard dance floors:) til RV reappeared on JazzFM many moons later and became an avid listener once again…
I still love todays JazzFunk and I loved the AcidJazz period in the mid 80’s-early 90’s I used to go to an AcidJazz club in New Cross SE London and those guys could really dance…
I have uploaded a few newer bands to my Skydrive and Yep they are still very much underground just like it was all those years ago…
I remember the 1st Purley All Dayer (Anyone on here go to that?)we were on the left hand side as you faced the stage up by the back wall and near the bar…
The Ladies toilets flooded and the Gents became Unisex toilets lol…
And those Whistles… I’m suprised we’re not all deaf now…
The best tune that day was - O’Jays “I Love Music” It was the 1st track played and the last track played that day…
Our crew:- Bill-Mickey-Woody-Roger-Chris-Ian-Heather-Dawn-Lisa-Lyn and Me.. plus others I can’t remember off the top of my head but there must have been about 15 of us that day…
DJs = Owen Washington-Froggy-Chris Hill-Robbie Vincent-Tom Holland-Sean French-Tony Blackburn-Pete Young- are the ones I can remember…
Hope you have enjoyed me waffling on
Cheers AL
Al
The tune you are after is “Deja Vu” from the AB’S.It was released in the uk,as a 12″ single, in 1983 on the streetwave label.I don’t have a copy but the track was included on “Classic jazz-funk mastercuts vol 6″(The jap-jazz edition)compiled by Jeff Young. Its a magical piece of music though.
Thanks Richie and well done mate..
I’ve just realised that I’ve actually got that track and its sitting on the Skydrive and PC lol..
Just goes to show I don’t know what I have got and haven’t got and would take days(non stop) to listen to all the tracks..
Am now listening to it as I type and yes its just a class tune…
Cheers
AL

Hi Al
Deja Vu is defibitelt the AB’s which was jap jazz
For Steve St James, that track you wanted to know iabout it was from The Warriors, a spin off from the LOTW/Incognito bands from their LP Behind The Mask and track is called Destination. I checked the track out, pulled out the Vinyl and listed to it.
Hope that helps
Regards
Praful
Bernard Oattes was he from Hall & Oates?
For all those who remember Jap-Jazz, here are tsome of the ones RV was spinning:
Skipjack
Skifflin’
Casiopea
to name but a few
Praful
Bernard Oattes used to be in a group called The Limit and they were from Holland. You may recall a track they did in the eighties called “Say yeah” which featured the vocals of Gwen Guthrie.Or if you are a real rare groove buff you may remember “Pop” which was the flip to “She’s so divine”. I love “The grand design” track-reminds me of peak Donald Fagen(steely Dan).
http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=4yf71cHsrTQ&feature=related

AL
Re Bernard Oattes: I’ve got The Limit’s ‘Say Yeah’ track - will try and upload it tommorrow. Another one that’s not available as a download or on a CD as far as I’m aware.
Bernard Oattes also wrote and produced a track for Five Star!! - ‘Love Take Over’ - and I quite like it.. but don’t tell anyone or the music police will be after me… !!
To Kenny Johnson
The track you were after is by Instant Funk and is on their Instant Funk LP great track I had forgotten about - if you are after a CD copy the only place I could find it was on the Salsoul 30th Encore CD on Suss’d Records may be quite hard to track down
Thanks to Al Steve and all the others for uploading all those tunes I am still figuring out how to transfer my vinyl - I’m trying hard not to download any until I’ve put some up myself but there are so many great tunes there now I’m not sure how long I can hold out….
To CarolBT
Looking for Dev Large - did you mean Keb Darge? He has compiled loads of albums of rare funk tunes try a Google search might be what you’re after
http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=eQ3WETXlshQ
I just wanted to bring this tune to people’s attention from last year that I think was overlooked. Its a tasty slowie entitled”Marathon” from Raheem Devaughn. It has echoes of Marvin Gaye in places and the chorus swirls around your head. The tune would fit into Robbie’s playlist with ease I feel.Sadly the rest of his cd does not maintain this high standard and is thus a one track album. See what you all think anyways..
Richie.
David C..
Transfer of vinyl.. You’ll need a record deck with a USB socket (Try Maplin Electronics they do a basic deck for around £50) and connect to pc via USB cable.. If not connect via the red/white/yellow cables to your pc if you have those socket connections on your pc, then you’ll need some vinyl transfer software try CNET on the web they have loads of free software and its all adware/spyware free..
Convert your vinyl to mp3 format and upload to pc or web site..
And feel free mate to download any tracks you fancy cos this music is meant to be listened to and not for collecting dust on a shelf..
Richard M..
My god 5 star hey !!! UK’s answer to the Jackson 5 lol..
Is that the siren of the music police I hear
Have uploaded this weeks RV show but not in its entirity sorry to say..(over slept)
Also uploaded The Rippingtons Album - Tourist In Paradise..
Also found a few more pics of the era and uploaded them.. Some posters of club nights from way back (ie: Flicks and just 2 quid to get in, those were the days lol)…
Take a look its cheaper than Flicks entrance fee… its totally free…
Cheers
AL
If you listened to the RV show today Robbie played Bob James - Women Of Ireland and I have just uploaded this beautiful haunting track to Skydrive and its the full length version (8mins)
I’d nearly forgotten this perfect chill out track…
All thats required is a nice glass of wine put your feet up and just listen to Bob James at his best…
AL
PS its from the Album (Bob James - Three)
Thanks Al for uploading RV’s latest show, I work Sundays and I’ve had problems recording the show. First I tried Freecorder but that records the first 50mins and then cuts out for some reason (keeps recording but there’s no sound). Then I’ve tried Nexus but it won’t allow me to set up a recording (I’m doing something wrong I know), or if I just start recording from 9am, it only records til 10am.. Argh!!!!
As to recording to from vinyl to pc, that I have mastered! Bought a deck with usb and downloaded Audacity software (for free) and all ok.
Have uploaded a few more tunes, The Limit track as promised plus a few more Robbie soul tunes from back in the day that are hard to get hold of - most of which I think have never even made it to a CD (and yes, Robbie did play a Sister Sledge track, and it’s taken me ages to track it down).
The Limit - Say Yeah
Sister Sledge - Keeping Good Loving
Robert Brookins - If You Only Knew (so catchy!)
Chapter 8 - It’s My Turn
Ruby Turner - In My Life
Richie, is the ‘Pop’ track you mentioned by The Limit - I don’t remember that one.
Cheers Richard M
I’ll try keeping the RV Show uploads going til jazzFM sort out a PodCast..
Seeing as its the 50th Anniversary of the Motor City and who knows with the current economic crisis in the U.S/World if the Motor City will just become a pile of rubble so
I have uploaded some of my Favs from that era and they are pretty good I must say myself..
A fantastic live version of (Marvin Gaye - What’s Going On-What’s Happening Brother)(9:00mins) you won’t believe its a live recording.. Plus Mercy Mercy Me/Lets Get It On
Also
Jr Walker And The All Stars - Walk In The Night 1972 (The 1st JazzFunk I ever heard)
Jr Walker And The All Stars - Road Runner/Why Can’t We Be Lovers/What Does It Take
The Spinners - I’ll Be Around/Its A Shame
The Temptations - Get Ready/Ain’t Too Proud
Happy 50th Anniversary Motor City and thank you for all those gems (too many to mention) that graced our ears for half a century…

Hi All
I’m putting together some of the most popular tracks that Robbie played in the Radio London Saturday Show days..
If anyone has any suggestions of the tracks that robbie had nailed to the turntable in those days please let me know!!!
Some of the best of the best of the best like the McCrarys an stuff like that…
AL..
Hi Al,
Sounds like a great idea. I know many of the readers of this site will not be able to contribute by uploading files etc, but it would be nice for those who have downloaded our tunes to put forward there faves from those Saturday shows.
Now is your chance to give something back!
It will benefit everybody as Al and myself will hunt those tunes down and make them available to all.
Steve St James
Here’s my first suggestion: Bob James, Sign of The Times. Robbie was the only jock at the time playing this amazing track! And if you put that on, it surely has to be accompanied by Rodney Franklin’s The Groove, MFSB’s Mysteries of the World, and George Duke’s Brazillian Love Affair.
Good work, Al!
Langers @ Radiocafe
For those who love Robbie’s phone in’s check out this gem on You Tube
> robbie vincent cracks up
Nice one Langers..
So is this the start of Robbie’s top 50 ???
Bob James - Sign of The Times
Rodney Franklin - The Groove
MFSB - Mysteries of the World
George Duke - Brazillian Love Affair
Any more suggestions???
Atlantic Starr - Grover Washington Jr - ???
AL
I know one of his fav was Tina Marie Portuguese Love. She has more talent on her small finger than Madonna has, also Anita Baker Sweet Love, Marvin Gaye Heavy Love affair, any track from Lamont Dozier, and ofcourse than man who introduced to the UK, MAze and Frankie Beverly.
Have Maze disbanded? Would be great to hear something new from them.
And finally the P-Funk (Parliament/George Clinton etc.)
Regards
PS
Cheers Praful
Great choice of tracks, And if you check out You Tube you may find some fairly recent live footage of Maze who are still sorta together but without Mr Beverly, I think..
From me how about Grover Washington Jr - Summer Madness ???
Please give us the artist and the track which you think must be in the list….
