I am appalled to hear Malcolm Laycock say that this Sunday night's show (27/07/09) was his last.

The poor guy is in a straight-jacket. Since Dec 2008 he had no say in the content of his show. He and his listeners love the pre-WWII British dance bands but Malcolm was told to drop that from his playlist in Dec 2008.

So, I suspect Malcolm has just had enough of his new producer or what his producer has been told to do.

Roy Oakshott was the BBC producer in the hey-day of the British dance bands music revival on R2. OK, Roy continues to provide us with excellent playlists on Russell Davies' show but in 2009 we have no dedicated British music programme for pre -1940 music, the era when British dance music was regarded as the best.

Don’t be misled by the title, which evokes the Dennis Potter play. The only link with TV is that this CD is being advertised via that medium, so it may garner fresh devotees for the music. The compilation draws mainly on recognisable songs by known artists, but suffers from a lack of clear focus on the genre. “Original songs” implies the first recording of a number, which is not always the case, three of the 44 tracks are instrumental, and by today’s standard a double CD should provide 150 minutes listening time. The slipcase is superficially attractive, but the photo is unrelated to the contents. There’s some inconsistency in terms of the track listing, which lacks recording dates. Ray Crick’s liner note fills in some of the gaps, but photos of the vocalists could have been included. Remastering is excellent, and I hope it sells in droves, but its appeal to established collectors may be influenced by how many of these tracks they own already.

Yes, he is great. Does anyone know if there are plans to release Haymes' last LP on CD, entitled "Then and Now"? It appears to be vary rare these days.

your comment is very aposite: apparently Sinatra said Haymes had "the best set of pipes in the business". Try him out, you'll enjoy his work

Good to see a cd which isn't the same old same old. I would like to hear more early recordings of Bing Crosby, Frank Sinatra and Nat King Cole on the radio. I haven't really heard much of Dick Haymes but sounds like he has a good set of pipes!
