Without doubt Robbie Vincent`s Saturday morning show on Radio London had an immense impact on me any many others too…..`making your morning better….`.
I had to stratetegically place my radio cassette recorder to get the best FM reception in order to tape each show….which I still have to this day…an irreplaceable back catalogue of gems.
And without his introdution of Frankie Beverly and Maze to the masses then I would say that their popularity to these shores, would not have attained the the acclaim they so deservedly acheived in the UK.
The two gigs they performed at Hammersmith Odeon in May 1982 won them `Best live gig` as voted by `Blues & Soul` readers….and deservedly so !
Robbie also had a great understanding of the `culture` that eclipsed the Soul/Jazz scene and would accomodate requests and dedications frequently on his show….an important factor that fuelled enthusiasm….unlike many `DJ`s`…who appear to play for their own gratification !
I don`t really think we all realised at the time how much of an impact the music he played, would have on our future perspective of music ! I for one live for the music that is Soul…that is Funky…that is Jazzy…it`s in me…and Mr Vincent was hugely influencial. Enough said ! `Tune into the Robbie Vincent Show….94.9…stereo…..making your morning better..dum..dum..da dum`
As a foot note, Al Mathews Friday night show on Radio 1 should not under any cicumstance go by un noticed…definately a stalwart of those heady days making good music available to young immpressionable kids like myself !

Thanks for your comments, Ian. I also grew up addicted to those Saturday morning shows, which are responsible for a majority of my record collection. This was surely the best soul show of all time, with Greg Edwards’ soul spectrum running it a close second. You were very sensible to record all of them at the time! I have a handful of his Radio 1 shows from the late 80s but wish I had recorded some of his legendary Saturday shows too. Still, at least the great man is back on air doing a fine job every Sunday morning and I’m still recording onto tape 30 years later.
Did you ever record any of Robbie’s phone-ins? He was also the best in the business at this, too.
I haven’t heard Al Matthews on Radio 1, but on your recommendation will give it a go.

Dear all, first of all I must say I am very flattered to see my name included in the poll for best soul DJ ever, thank you. To be included alongside such legends as Robbie Vincent and Peter Young is really quite humbling.
Both those guys were an inspiration to me and what they played had a direct effect on my record collection. They are also both first class broadcasters.
Robbie and Peter were also very supportive of the records I made and one of the biggest thrills of my career (genuinely) was to hear Robbie play my tracks on his show.. I recall he particularly liked “Breathe Deep” from the first L.A. Mix album. It was incredible to me back then to hear it being played by such an icon and somebody for whom I held such respect (and still do).
Another amazing and surreal event in my life was when Peter Young DJ’d at my wedding.. for free! He was of course brilliant and had everyone up dancing! He is also one of the nicest and most down to earth people I have ever had the pleasure of meeting.
I also had the pleasure of working with Greg Edwards many times. Unfortunately a personal issue between us tainted our friendship irreparably, but there is no doubt his soul spectrum show was the holy grail for many Londoners.
So for me it’s Robbie, with Peter a close second and we must not forget one of the most powerful London club DJ’s, Steve Walsh. Musically, the selection of “crowd pleasers” (Ain’t no stoppin’ us now / I found Lovin’ / Encore) that he played at almost every gig may not have made him the most adventurous of DJ’s, but nobody could command attention from a live audience like Steve, the size of his voice was exceeded only by his girth! R.I.P.
