> OWNER PROFILE Spencer Wright
Spencer Wright is a car nut who has owned more motors than most of us had matchbox models as a child. He now owns this glorious 911t.

> TELL US ABOUT YOUR CAR My car is a Porsche 911t targa - 'targa' meaning the middle of the roof lifts out to provide unique open-top motoring. It's a Californian model so has probably been used to plenty of 'roof off action' in its life.
> HOW LONG HAVE YOU HAD THE 911? I've had the 911 for 3 happy years now.
> HOW MUCH DID YOU PAY FOR IT? I managed to get this one the right side of £20k, but pristine examples of 'standard' early 911s (i.e. pre 1973) can fetch up to £30,000, depending on condition, colour and spec.
> WHY DID YOU BUY IT? As an avid Porsche fan since my early teens and having flirted briefly with a 1959 356A, the 'early' 911 in my opinion is the perfect choice as a second car for the true classic car enthusiast. The 911 was responsible for the revolution of road going racing cars. Having 4 seats (which is now necessary to accommodate the growing family), a bullet proof engine and timeless looks, were also key decision factors.
> WHERE DID YOU BUY IT? I bought the car from a specialist reseller/importer of pre-'73 911's and 356's.
> HOW MUCH HAVE YOU SPENT IMPROVING IT? The car had one previous owner and was imported from San Francisco. Therefore it was already in excellent condition. The dealer repainted the sun faded exterior in the original dark blue and refurbished the targa top and allow wheels. Apart from that, it's in great condition and rust free.
The experts suggest that you should budget at least £1k per annum to own and maintain a classic car such as the 911. With limited mileage classic insurance at £180 pa, free car licence and a recent bill of £1200 to replace the hydraulic chain tensioners (the early 911 Achilles' heal), overall costs to run the 911 have been minimal.
> WOULD YOU BUY ANOTHER PORSCHE 911? Yes, without doubt - these cars are so addictive.
> DO YOU DRIVE ANY OTHER CARS? Yes, a Golf TDI for work and the family Audi A4. [No bias in favour of preference for German cars there then Spencer... Ed]
> WHAT IS YOUR ULTIMATE CAR? Difficult one, as there have been so many great Porsches over the years. I think if I were to choose one, though, it would have to be a Porsche 356 Speedster.
> WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE PLACE TO DRIVE? The 400 mile motorway drive from Paris via Millau heading towards the South of France is superb and well recommended - limited traffic, bright sunshine and fantastic scenery.
> FAVOURITE MUSIC TO PLAY IN THE CAR? I tend to prefer the glorious soundtrack which comes from the exhaust pipe!
